The U.S. hostage envoy, who recently held rare direct talks with Hamas, stated on Sunday that he was optimistic that a deal could be made “within weeks” to release all civilians still in captivity by the Palestinian group.
In an interview with CNN, Adam Boehler, a Jewish American, admitted that it was “odd” to meet face-to-face with leaders of an organization that the U.S. has classified as a “terrorist” group since 1997. These talks took place in the past few weeks.
Boehler acknowledged Israel’s “consternation” over the fact that the U.S. had engaged in talks with Hamas but explained that his aim had been to revive the “fragile” negotiations.
“In the end, I think it was a very helpful meeting,” he said, adding: “I think something could come together within weeks… I think there is a deal where they can get all of the prisoners out, not just the Americans.”
Boehler also hinted at the possibility of future discussions with the militants, telling CNN: “You never know. You know sometimes you’re in the area and you drop by.”
Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, taking 251 hostages, including several Americans. Around 58 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza.
In response, Israel invaded Gaza, leading to a prolonged and intense conflict that has lasted more than 15 months, displacing a significant portion of the population.
The first phase of a ceasefire centered on releasing some hostages concluded earlier this month. However, both parties are in disagreement over the timing of the second phase, which is aimed at establishing a more lasting peace.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a threat to Hamas, warning that Gaza would face more destruction if all remaining hostages were not released, calling it a “last warning” to Hamas leaders.
“I understand the consternation and the concern” on Israel’s part at the talks, Boehler said, adding: “We’re the United States. We’re not an agent of Israel.”
Boehler shared his thoughts on meeting with the terrorists face-to-face.
“I think when you walk and you sit in front of somebody, and you know what they’ve done, it’s hard not to think of it,” he reflected.
He also mentioned the importance of recognizing their humanity, but conceded, “It definitely feels a little odd knowing what they really are.”
