The U.S. Mission to the United Nations released a statement Tuesday reaffirming its opposition to Francesca Albanese’s continued role as the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories.
“The United States continues to strongly denounce Francesca Albanese’s tenure as the ‘UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967.’ The Human Rights Council’s (HRC) support for Ms. Albanese offers yet another example of why President Trump ordered the United States to cease all participation in the HRC,” the statement said.
The mission went further, accusing the UN of enabling hatred and antisemitism through her position. “Ms. Albanese’s actions also make clear the United Nations tolerates antisemitic hatred, bias against Israel, and the legitimization of terrorism,” the statement continued.
Despite ongoing controversy, Albanese was recently granted a three-year extension in her UNHRC post, a move approved by the 47-member council. This occurred even as opposition from countries such as Israel, Hungary, and Argentina attempted to block the renewal.
Albanese has faced criticism since her appointment in 2022, largely due to earlier social media remarks claiming that the “Jewish lobby” exerts influence over the United States—comments widely condemned as antisemitic.
She responded at the time by rejecting those accusations, arguing her statements had been “mischaracterized,” though additional examples of anti-Israel rhetoric have emerged since then.
Her inflammatory commentary intensified following the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel, during which over 1,200 people were murdered and 250 others taken hostage. Albanese has referred to the attack as something that should be considered within a broader “context” and framed it as retaliation for Israeli “aggression.”
In recent months, Albanese has escalated her rhetoric further, accusing Israel of committing genocide, equating its leadership with the “Third Reich,” and comparing Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.
