Vice President JD Vance got a hearty welcome from American troops stationed in Greenland, who chanted “USA! USA! USA!” as he took a podium during his visit there Friday, Breitbart reports.
Vance arrived with Second Lady Usha Vance earlier in the day to the Pituffik Space Base, a U.S. Space Force base on the northwest coast of Greenland.
He told U.S. troops deployed at the base, “I want to bring a message from President Trump. He’s grateful for your service, grateful for what you do up here, and just wanted me to tell you that he’s proud of you.”
Vance was accompanied on the trip by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Senator Mike Lee of Utah.
Speaking to service members stationed there, Waltz said, “You are continuing a tradition…of the U.S. military’s presence in Greenland since World War II… and President Trump is absolutely serious, with the vice president and his team, about the Arctic, and the security that the Arctic brings.”
Upon stepping off the plane and being greeted by the biting cold, Vance greeted the troops with a quip: “It’s cold … here. Nobody told me.”
This marked Vance’s second stop of the week to connect with American forces.
Earlier, on Wednesday, he made his way to Quantico Marine Corps Base to reconnect with fellow Marines and examine various weapons systems.
Having completed a four-year stint in the Marines—including a deployment to Iraq—Vance was clearly in his element at Quantico. He gave a speech to an audience of around 750 Marines, helped serve food in the mess hall, joined some of them for a meal, and later made his way to the firing range. There, he tried his hand at several weapons, including an infantry assault rifle, a sniper rifle, a machine gun, and even a Howitzer. He also piloted a drone.
With a touch of humor, he noted that during his service he never had the rank to be stationed at Quantico, and that played into his decision to pursue higher office.“As a proud member of the E-4 Mafia, I had never made it to Quantico myself, but it’s one of the reasons why I wanted to run for Vice President. I thought maybe it was time for the colonels and generals to listen to the corporals for a change. How’s that sound?”
