Vice President JD Vance announced Tuesday that he will visit Greenland later this week as part of a high-profile U.S. delegation, following renewed calls from President Donald Trump for the United States to take over the vast Arctic island.
Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland holds strategic value for U.S. national security and that Washington should pursue control of the territory. However, the idea has been firmly rejected by both the governments of Greenland and Denmark, with polls consistently showing that nearly all Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States.
“Looking forward to visiting Greenland on Friday,” Vance posted on the social media platform X, along with a video in which he elaborated on the purpose of the trip.
“A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and of course, to threaten the people of Greenland,” Vance said. “So we are going to check out how things are going there. Unfortunately, leaders in both America and Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long.”
Greenland has been under Danish rule for centuries, first as a colony and now as a semi-sovereign territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Its legal status is defined by the Danish constitution, and any change would require a constitutional amendment—an unlikely prospect given Denmark’s firm stance on the matter.
The U.S. delegation’s visit, which includes a stop at an American military base in Greenland, will run from Thursday through Saturday. In addition to Vice President Vance, the delegation includes his wife Usha Vance, White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
