Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that she had struck an agreement with President Trump to suspend the planned 25% tariffs for one month in return for border-related concessions.
She explained that Mexico committed to bolstering the US-Mexico border by deploying 10,000 members of its National Guard to help combat the flow of fentanyl into the United States. The two leaders discussed these measures during a phone call on Monday morning.
Following this, the United States will collaborate with Mexico to address the issue of weapons trafficking into its southern neighbor.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum said in a statement, per a translation. “Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade,” she added. “They are pausing tariffs for one month from now.”
Previously, Trump had imposed a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico, accusing the country of not meeting his demands to tackle the crises of fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.
