Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) accused billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk of performing a Nazi salute during a celebration honoring U.S. President Donald Trump at the Capitol One Arena in Washington.
Musk, who has supported Trump, thanked attendees for electing the president. He then pressed his right hand sharply to his heart and thrust his hand skyward.
“I never imagined we would see the day when what appears to be a heil Hitler salute would be made behind the presidential seal,” Nadler stated. (He shared a post from PBS News which said that Musk “gave what appeared to be a fascist salute.”)
“This abhorrent gesture has no place in our society and belongs in the darkest chapters of human history,” the Jewish Democrat added. “I urge all of my colleagues to unite in condemning this hateful gesture for what it is: antisemitism.”

The conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt was among the many who insisted that Musk did no such thing.
“Just block anyone who asserts Elon Musk used the Nazi salute today. Musk did not. It is easy to see that he didn’t,” Hewitt wrote.
“Those asserting that he did are low and absurd people without a shred of credibility,” he added. “Impossible to make this stuff up but TDS is pulsing big in its death throes.” (TDS is a reference to “Trump derangement syndrome.”)
“Not a single person on this planet believes Musk gave a Nazi salute,” wrote David Harsanyi, a senior writer at Washington Examiner.
The Anti-Defamation League called it “a delicate moment.”
“It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety. It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge,” the ADL stated.
“In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath,” it added. “This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a member of the far-left, anti-Israel “squad” in Congress, responded to the ADL.
“Just to be clear, you are defending a heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity,” the congresswoman wrote. “People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now. You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all.”
