Facebook said on Thursday it had removed 265 Facebook and Instagram accounts, pages, groups and events linked to Israel due to what it called “inauthentic behavior” targeting users in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa.
The move is part of wider efforts by Facebook to address concerns over privacy lapses and hate speech in social media.
Facebook said the “inauthentic” activity originated in Israel and focused on Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Angola, Niger and Tunisia as well as in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
“The people behind this network used fake accounts to run pages, disseminate their content and artificially increase engagement,” Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy at Facebook, said in a statement.

Israel’s bureaucratic red tape is costing the state NIS 14 billion ($3.9 billion) a year, one percent of its gross domestic product (GDP), according to a new report published Monday. Written by Zvi Eckstein, former deputy governor of the Bank of Israel, and labor economics researcher Sergei Sumkin, the report states that Israel has failed to conform to OECD standards or act on recommendations of inter-ministerial teams set up for that purpose.
“It is all about ego,” Eckstein said Monday when presenting the research at a conference at The Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, in central Israel. None of the bodies in charge of cutting red tape will collaborate, he said.

A couple in Rishon L’Tzion thatsuspected that the nanny they hired was abusing their toddler were horrified to confirm their fears.
The suspecting couple set up hidden cameras in their home and caught the nanny slapping and shaking their screaming child and later dragging the toddler across the floor.
The couple confronted the woman on camera and later called the police on her. After viewing the footage, the police proceeded to arrest the woman.

Britain agrees with the United States that Iran poses a heightened threat and will work closely with its ally, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Thursday.
Hunt said he had discussed Iran with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week in London, and again in Brussels on Monday.
“We share the same assessment of the heightened threat posed by Iran,” Hunt said on Twitter. “As always we work closely with the USA.”
Earlier this week, Britain’s Defense Ministry backed a British general who appeared to question the Trump administration’s claims that an imminent threat had emerged from Iran.

An assault on the Polish ambassador in Israel shows “hatred” fostered by Jews against Polish citizens, President Andrzej Duda told a rally ahead of this month’s European elections.
Israeli police said Wednesday they’d detained a man who shouted and spat at Ambassador Marek Magierowski outside the Polish embassy in Tel Aviv the previous day. Hours later, Duda called on Israel to explain the incident, which he said “humiliated” the envoy and condemned as an attack on Poland’s “pride and dignity.”

Amnesty International called on Thursday for Israel‘s government to ensure that an Israeli company, whose spyware has been linked to a WhatsApp breach that may have targeted human rights groups, be held accountable for the way its software is used.
Amnesty on Tuesday filed a petition in Israel seeking the revocation of NSO Group’s export license and told Reuters that it was up to the government to take a firmer stance against export licenses that have “resulted in human rights abuses.”
Israel‘s Ministry of Defense declined to comment.
WhatsApp, a unit of Facebook, said on Tuesday that a security breach on its messaging app may have targeted human rights groups.
