Riders who don’t wear face coverings on subways, buses and commuter rails will soon face a $50 fine, the MTA said Thursday. The mandatory mask rule will apply to all riders on subways, buses, Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road and will take effect on Monday, Sept. 14, MTA chairman Pat Foye said Thursday. The MTA, at Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s request, is filing a rule on an emergency basis with the New York secretary of state that will allow for the $50 fine, Foye said in a conference call with the governor. “The rule will be effective immediately upon filing with the secretary of state on Monday,” Foye said. I was a carefree student studying in Washington DC with the usual get-up-and-go of a young person. Late nights at the library, long walks around the campus. It was a fantastic time in my life – full of promise of a bright future. I was dating a wonderful young man. In fact, he had moved from Ohio, where both of our families lived, to DC so we can date more easily. An engagement was imminent. And then it all collapsed. I was in pain and feeling so utterly tired. The doctors were as puzzled as I was. But when the results came back, it became clear. I had the disease that people don’t even like to mention.

The Health Ministry stated on Thursday that 3,904 cases were diagnosed on Wednesday, breaking Israel’s own record of daily cases since the start of the pandemic for the second time this week. The number of active cases is 31,769, with 474 seriously ill patients, of whom 133 are ventilated. The death toll has risen to 1,054. The coronavirus cabinet convened on Thursday afternoon to discuss the possibility of a nationwide lockdown, possibly over the Yamim Tovim. Health Ministry Director-General Prof. Chezy Levy said on Thursday that Israel needs to take more drastic measures to stem the coronavirus infection rate.

Century 21 Stores — a destination for bargain hunters looking for fat deals on designer dresses and shoes, cosmetics and housewares for nearly 60 years — has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is winding down its business, shutting all 13 stores across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida. Century 21 joins more than two dozen retailers who have filed for bankruptcy since the pandemic which forced non-essential stores to temporarily close. In a statement, the New York-based company said that the decision followed nonpayment by the company’s insurance providers of approximately $175 million due under policies put in place to protect against losses stemming from business interruption.

A huge fire broke out Thursday at the Port of Beirut, triggering panic among residents traumatized by last month’s massive explosion there that killed and injured thousands of people. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire at the facility, which was decimated by the Aug. 4 explosion when nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate detonated, triggering a shock wave explosion that blasted windows, doors and walls miles away. A column of black smoke billowed from the port at midday Thursday, with orange flames leaping from the ground. The Lebanese army said the fire is at a warehouse where oil and tires are placed in the duty-free zone at the port adding that fighting the blaze is ongoing and that army helicopters are taking part in the operation.

A fringe group of Breslov Chassidim were arrested on Wednesday after they rioted at the Kever of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov in protest of the strict regulations and lack of agreement regarding the number of Chassidim who will be allowed to visit the site during Rosh HaShanah. The rioters broke down barricades that were put in place to keep order and adherence to Corona regulations at the site. The rioters were arrested and the barricades were put back. The majority of the Breslov Chassidim supported the idea of putting up the barricades to help direct people where to go and keep a distance from one another while visiting the site. On Wednesday, a group of Chasidim arrived at the site and claimed that the barricades prevented access to the grave and began to riot.

The head of Israel’s first coronavirus ward in Sheba Medical Center slammed the Israeli public for disregarding human lives by failing to adhere to health regulations, Ynet reported. Dr. Gadi Segal wrote a post on Facebook urging Israeli to start viewing the coronavirus pandemic more seriously. “I’ve posted the names of the people who have died as a result of the disease,” Segal wrote. “Many of them I knew, some died in my arms,” “Their blood is on the head of anyone who thinks that his theories, his parnassah, his personal liberty, his freedom of speech, his right to refuse and in general, he himself, is more important than the lives of others.
