In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, every day brought news of more and more people who were being hospitalized and ventilated in critical condition. At first, the focus was solely on saving lives, but as time passed and patients started to stabilize, calls started pouring into BINA on a daily basis.  Dozens of families were frantically trying to get COVID patients admitted to vent-weaning and rehab facilities after a long and debilitating hospital stay. At the time, these facilities were full to capacity, some with long waiting lists, and admissions were limited in general because of various restrictions and regulations.   The staff at BINA was overwhelmingly busy working with families to figure out a viable plan for each of these many patients.

Why Is Maseches Eruvin different? Why are so many people hesitant about learning the Masechta and ultimately drop off the daily Daf? Well, the primary reason is, the new and sometimes foreign concepts that are introduced are challenging especially when studying at a fast pace. Well designed visuals and most importantly a good Magid Shiur will certainly alleviate some of the confusion. At All Daf, we felt that besides the amazing daily content provided by our Maggidei Shiur, a unique series titled “Bringing Eruvin to Life” could serve as an introduction and a guide as the learner journeys through the Masechta. We hired expert Eruv builder Rabbi Micha Shotkin to take us up on his cherry picker and down into the water (almost) to teach us how a community eruv is built.

An emergency room doctor in Boston is assembling thousands of voter registration kits for distribution at hospitals and doctor’s offices. Later this month, students at Harvard and Yale’s medical schools are planning a contest to see which of the Ivy League rivals can register the most voters. And a medical student in Rhode Island has launched an effort to get emergency ballots into the hands of patients who find themselves unexpectedly in the hospital around Election Day. Amid the dual public health crises of COVID-19 and racism, some in the medical community are prescribing a somewhat nontraditional remedy: voting.

Public fury over this week’s massive explosion in Beirut took a new turn Saturday night as protesters stormed government institutions and clashed for hours with security forces, who responded with heavy volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets. One police officer was killed and dozens of people hurt in the confrontations, which played out in streets that were wrecked from Tuesday’s blast at the port that devastated much of the city and killed nearly 160 people. Dozens were still missing and nearly 6,000 people injured. The disaster has taken popular anger to a new level in a country already reeling from an unprecedented economic and financial crisis and near bankruptcy.

Following Israel’s announcement last week that is planning on opening its skies on August 16, a Channel 12 News report revealed some of the plan’s details. The Israeli government has contacted 13 countries that are likely to allow Israeli tourists into their countries despite Israel’s current status as a “red country.” These countries include Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Jordan, Latvia, Finland, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Germany and Austria. Currently, Israelis are allowed to enter the United States and Ukraine. Travelers into Israeli from “green countries” will not be required to quarantine. Those from “red countries” will be required to quarantine but the quarantine period will likely be shortened from the current 14 days.

U.S. intelligence officials believe that Russia is using a variety of measures to denigrate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden ahead of the November election and that individuals linked to the Kremlin are boosting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid, the country’s counterintelligence chief said in the most specific warning to date about the threat of foreign interference. U.S. officials also believe China does not want Trump to win a second term and has accelerated its criticism of the White House, expanding its efforts to shape public policy in America and to pressure political figures seen as opposed to Beijing’s interests. The statement Friday from William Evanina is believed to be the most pointed declaration by the U.S.

More than 520,000 homes and businesses in the New York tri-state area were still without electricity Saturday as utilities worked to get the lights on four days after Tropical Storm Isaias. Tuesday’s storm dealt the region a surprisingly sharp blow, killing at least one person, downing trees, halting commuter trains and initially knocking out power to more than 2.5 million customers. A customer can be a single home or a skyscraper, sometimes even an entire apartment complex. “We understand the frustration,” Con Edison President Tim Cawley said at a virtual news briefing Saturday afternoon as 71,000 of the utility’s customers in New York City and its northern suburbs remained out of power, down from 300,000 Tuesday.
