By: Sandy Eller The collective voices of nonpublic school children in the five boroughs have been amplified, as leaders of Seventh-day Adventist schools join the Committee of NYC Religious and Independent School Officials. The announcement of the Committee’s expansion was made earlier this week by Committee chairman Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, executive vice president of Agudath Israel of America. “I was in high school when my parents lost their lives in a car crash. They had a family full of kids at home, and we lost them forever, just because of one person texting while driving. In the few years that have passed since we lost them, my siblings and I have really struggled. Losing parents turns a home completely upside down, and changes everyone in it forever. Now that I’m a kallah, I feel their absence more than ever – I go alone to the different appointments. Everything comes out of my pocket from what I’ve saved up from my job. And ultimately, I’ll walk to my chuppah without them.” – Rachel*, 22 Rav Elimelech Biderman shlit”a has once again taken responsibility for a group of suffering young people.

New York’s teachers’ unions said a single COVID-19 case in a school should trigger its immediate closure for 14 days as they listed demands Wednesday for reopening this fall. New York State United Teachers and the United Federation of Teachers called for the state policy just as New York is poised to announce initial decisions on reopening plans submitted by roughly 700 school districts. The unions said in a release that districts moving ahead with re-openings “must err on the side of caution at all times.” Districts submitted reopening proposals last week amid worries that resumption of in-person classes could put students, teachers and their families at risk. A total of 415,767 Israelis were required to enter quarantine due to exposure to a confirmed coronavirus carrier during the month of July, a Ynet report said. Israelis were informed of their requirement to enter quarantine either by the Shin Bet, which conducted contact tracing or by the Health Ministry following an epidemiological investigation. About 246,000 Israelis were instructed to enter quarantine by the Shin Bet versus only 67,000 who were instructed to enter quarantine by the Health Ministry following an epidemiological investigation. Furthermore, at least 100,000 Israelis entered quarantine through their own initiative after becoming aware that they had been in contact with a confirmed coronavirus carrier, without being instructed to do so.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he’s considering delivering his Republican convention acceptance speech from the White House after his initial plans to hold the event in two battleground states were foiled by coronavirus concerns and health restrictions. The move would mark an unprecedented use of public property for partisan political purposes. “It’s easy and I think it’s a beautiful setting, and we are thinking about that. It’s certainly one of the alternatives,” Trump said during a wide-ranging telephone interview on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends.” The Republican National Convention is scheduled for Aug. 24-27, with Trump’s acceptance speech capping the final night.

From the opening scene of a wealthy man and a beggar standing on either side of a doorway, through 157 daf detailing the law and spirit of Shabbos, to the curious conclusion of an Amora measuring his bath water, Mesechta Shabbos has been a comforting companion for hundreds of thousands of Jews through this perplexing half-a-year.
