New York’s mass transit agency wants Apple to come up with a better way for iPhone users to unlock their phones without taking off their masks, as it seeks to guard against the spread of the coronavirus in buses and subways. In a letter to CEO Tim Cook obtained by The Associated Press, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Patrick Foye said riders have been seen removing their masks to unlock their phones using face-recognition technology, despite a recent update by Apple that simplifies the unlock process for people wearing masks. Previously, an iPhone user wearing a mask would have to wait a few seconds as face recognition software tried to identify them before they eventually could enter a passcode.

All appeals against the conviction of a 93-year-old Nazi concentration camp guard have been dropped, a Hamburg court said Monday, making the decision legally binding and easing the way for possible future prosecutions. Bruno Dey was convicted last month of 5,232 counts of accessory to murder in Hamburg state court — equal to the number of people believed to have been killed at Stutthof during his service there in 1944 and 1945. Because he was 17 and 18 at the time of his alleged crimes, Dey’s case was heard in juvenile court and he was given a two-year suspended sentence. Dey was convicted under new legal reasoning that even though there was no evidence linking him to a specific crime, as a camp guard he was guilty of accessory to murders committed while he was there.

Whether President Donald Trump has the constitutional authority to extend federal unemployment benefits by executive order remains unclear. Equally up in the air is whether states, which are necessary partners in Trump’s plan to bypass Congress, will sign on. Trump announced an executive order Saturday that extends additional unemployment payments of $400 a week to help cushion the economic fallout of the pandemic. Congress had approved payments of $600 a week at the outset of the coronavirus outbreak, but those benefits expired Aug. 1 and Congress has been unable to agree on an extension. Many Republicans have expressed concern that a $600 weekly benefit, on top of existing state benefits, gives people an incentive to stay unemployed.

President Trump was abruptly whisked out of his news conference by a Secret Service Agent on Monday afternoon. The Agent whispered something in the President’s ear, and immediately removed the president as he was addressing the media. The President returned to the podium in the Briefing Room around 10 minutes later and announced that the Secret Service has just shot someone outside the White House. Fox Reporter John Roberts confirmed that he heard shots fired. Trump says it happened outside the Whitehouse grounds. The President says on leaving the Briefing Room, he was taken to the Oval Office, not the “Bunker”. He said he waited a few minutes until the Secret Service said it was safe for him to return to the Briefing Room, where the windows overlook the North Lawn and fenceline.

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson said Monday that he has subpoenaed the FBI to produce documents to his committee related to the Trump-Russia investigation. The Wisconsin senator also defended a separate investigation he is leading into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and Ukraine, even as Democrats say the probe has the effect of amplifying Russian propaganda and as U.S. intelligence officials say they have assessed that Russia is working to denigrate Biden ahead of the November election. Johnson’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is one of multiple Republican-led Senate panels scrutinizing the FBI’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of the Sadigura Rebbe, HaRav Yisroel Moshe Friedman ZATZAL. The Rebbe was a member of the Moetzas Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisrael in Eretz Yisroel. The Rebbe had been sick for some time, and spent nearly a year in Los Angeles for various treatments. He returned to Eretz Yisroel a few months ago. The Rebbe suddenly collapsed at his home on Monday night, and was rushed to Tel Hashomer Hospital. He was Niftar a short while later. Levaya details are not yet available. Hamas fired a barrage of almost a dozen rockets in what is considered to be a sign of the terror group’s determination to end the relative calm on the border in the last few months. The rockets weren’t directed at Israel but rather at the Mediterranean Sea, a training exercise which the terror group routinely carries out but always at night and almost always just one rocket at a time. This time it launched the rockets during the day to the cheers of Gazan residents. Hamas is seemingly determined to escalate tension on the Gaza border in the past week, launching dozens of incendiary and explosive balloons into southern Israel, causing several fires, after a lull of several months when almost no balloons were seen. Balloons were even found in the city of Arad, almost 80 kilometers away.

It’s no secret: The past zman was an extremely difficult time for yeshiva bochurim around the world. Many young boys looked forward to spending their spring learning Torah, gaining guidance for their rebbeim, and growing as a person. Unfortunately, their most sacred space, the beis midrash, was rendered unsafe by the coronavirus. They were cast out, back to their homes, where they lacked that essential ‘yeshiva’ experience. Now that the summer has come and restrictions have loosened, Jewish families around the world are enjoying a restful bein hazmanim, taking trips & relaxing. Some very special bochurim, however, have opted to use this time to catch up on the Torah learning that they missed.
