A western New York man pleaded guilty Monday to leaving voicemail death threats for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Adam Schiff because he was angry about impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, federal prosecutors said. Sentencing is set for Sept. 1 in federal court in Rochester. Lippa admitted he made profanity-laced phone threats against the New York senator and California representative, both Democrats, in January and February. A federal appeals court on Monday tossed out three lawsuits challenging President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from predominantly Muslim countries, a victory for the Trump administration in its yearslong defense of the ban. A three-judge panel of the Richmond-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that a federal judge in Maryland made a mistake when he refused to dismiss the lawsuits after the Supreme Court upheld the ban in 2018 in a separate legal challenge filed in Hawaii. The ban, put in place just a week after Trump took office in January 2017, sparked an international outcry from Muslim advocates and others who said it was rooted in religious bias.

Britain began imposing a 14-day quarantine Monday on travelers coming into the country, months after other European countries imposed similar measures to control the spread of the coronavirus. The quarantine was roundly criticized by the aviation and tourism industries, with many questioning its timing. Critics say its introduction has come too late to be useful, and some doubted it could be effectively enforced. Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary called the quarantine a “political stunt” and argued that it will cause “untold devastation” for the country’s tourism industry, not just for the airlines. “The thousands of hotels, the thousands of visitor attractions, restaurants in the next couple of months — July and August are the two key months for British tourism,” he added.

An important letter to the public from Rav Shimon Galai & Rav Mordechai Shmuel Edelstein: “We are coming with a fervent request for one of our fellow citizens of our city, Bnei Brak, who teaches Torah and a father to a large family. He has found himself in serious financial trouble, he is drowning in medical debt and his home is about to collapse… But he still needs a lot of help to rehabilitate his family. Certainly, whoever helps this family will merit Heavenly help and much success in everything they do.

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar went beyond calls to defund the police following the death of George Floyd, instead calling for dismantling the Minneapolis Police Department because it is “rotten to the root.” “We need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department. Because here’s the thing, there’s a cancer,” she said, continuing that amputation is needed so it doesn’t spread. “The Minneapolis Police Department is rotten to the root, and so when we dismantle it, we get rid of that cancer, and we allow for something beautiful to rise, and that reimagining allows us to figure out what public safety looks like for us,” Omar, a first-term congresswoman, said.
