Investigators looking into a dead-of-night bus crash over the weekend on the Pennsylvania Turnpike have identified the five people killed, but it may take much longer before they will able to say what caused the pileup that also left dozens injured. The National Transportation Safety Board plans to discuss the investigation at a news conference scheduled for later Monday. Their focus will almost certainly include a close look at the driver, Shuang Qing Feng, 58, who was thrown from the bus and died at the scene early Sunday, on Interstate 76 in a mountainous and rural area about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.

Chaverim Melbourne volunteers hit the road today (Asara Beteves) to take food packages that they prepared for those affected by the devastating bushfires that have destroyed the homes of thousands around Victoria. The meals were delivered to the shelters where those who lost their homes and belongings are housed temporarily, where they were well received by the volunteers and emergency services. At least 24 people have been killed and over 2,000 homes have been destroyed by the bushfires, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Monday. Over 12 million acres have burned in Australia since the start of the fire season. New South Wales, in the southeastern part of the country, has been particularly hard hit by fires this season.

The Guardian Angels, a private, unarmed crime-prevention group, said it would start patrolling Boro Park, to assist the Shomrim Patrol, following a series of anti-Semitic attacks. Curtis Sliwa, who founded the organization in 1979 in New York City was in Boro Park on Monday night and spoke for the cameras, There is only one language the thugs understand”, Sliwa said on camera. “Pain compliance”. “Shomrim, remember you’re roots. You gotta get rough and you gotta get tough…and most importantly, you gotta let them know you mean business. If they come into your Jewish community to attack your people, then you gotta get out there and send them a message they understand, an attitude readjustment.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

The U.S. strike that killed Iran’s top military commander may have had an indirect casualty: a diplomatic solution to denuclearizing North Korea. Experts say the escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran will diminish already fading hopes for such an outcome and inspire North Korea’s decision-makers to tighten their hold on the weapons they see, perhaps correctly, as their strongest guarantee of survival. North Korea’s initial reaction to the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani has been cautious. The country’s state media was silent for several days before finally on Monday issuing a brief report on the attack that didn’t even mention Soleimani’s name.

U.S. officials on Monday braced for Iran to respond to the killing of its most powerful general, noting heightened military readiness in the country and preparing for a possible “tit-for-tat” attempt on the life of an American military commander. President Donald Trump ordered the Jan. 2 strike against Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, after the death of an American contractor in Iraq. Now, as the massive demonstrations of Iran’s public mourning period for Soleimani come to a close, officials believe the next steps by America’ longtime foe will determine the ultimate course of the latest crisis.

Britain’s opposition Labour Party will announce its new leader on April 4, about four months after suffering a bruising defeat in the general election. The party decided the timetable Monday at a meeting of the National Executive Committee. The person chosen will replace Jeremy Corbyn, who led the party to a resounding defeat to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party on Dec. 12. Labour had its worst showing since 1935, prompting Corbyn’s decision to step down after two consecutive election losses. The party says its new leader will be chosen by a postal ballot to run from Feb. 21 until April 2. Under party rules, there are several preliminary stages to the contest before it goes to a postal vote of party members.

Civil rights groups and lawmakers were demanding information from federal officials following reports that dozens of Iranian-Americans were held up and questioned at the border as they returned to the United States from Canada over the weekend. In a statement Sunday, the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said more than 60 Iranians and Iranian-Americans were detained and questioned at the Peace Arch Border Crossing in Blaine, Washington. Many were returning from a concert by an Iranian pop star in Vancouver, British Columbia. “Those detained reported that their passports were confiscated and they were questioned about their political views and allegiances,’’ the statement said. Tensions between the United States and Iran are high following a U.S.

Someone appears to have deliberately tried to release bedbugs in a Walmart store in Pennsylvania, and police are searching for whoever was behind it, authorities said Monday. Troopers have made no arrests and do not have any suspects, said Trooper Cindy Schic, a state police spokeswoman. A manager from the Walmart store in Edinboro, in northwestern Pennsylvania, contacted police Saturday after store employees found pill bottles with bugs in them. Some elements of the story, including whether the bugs were alive, are in dispute. It started Thursday, when store staff found a closed pill bottle containing live bugs, authorities said. The bottle was found in a boy’s jacket for sale in the clothing department and thrown out in the trash, police said.
