By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5TJT.com The Slabodka Yeshiva is called the “Mother of Yeshivos” for a reason.  In the United States, the heads and founders of most of the early Yeshivos in this country were trained by Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel (better known as the Alter) and his students.  Yeshivas Torah VaDaas, Chaim Berlin, Lakewood’s BMG, Chofetz Chaim, Ner Yisroel, Beis Medrash Elyon, Mir – all were headed or founded by students of Slabodka or students of these students. The same is true for many of the Yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel – these Yeshivos are daughters or grand-daughters of the mother Yeshiva – Slabodka. But why did the Slabodka Yeshiva originally move to Hevron in 1924 in the first place?

El Al, amid an unprecedented financial crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic, has turned to cargo flights to make up for some of the revenue it normally earns through passenger flights, Globes reported. Israel’s national airline signed a contract with German transport and logistics company Kuehne + Nagel International to operate 150 cargo flights over the next six months. Pre-coronavirus pandemic, cargo flights comprised less than 50% of El Al’s operations. The flights are operating daily between China and Italy via Israel, dropping off cargo in Italy. Some of the flights will then continue to other locations in Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland to pick up cargo and bring it back to Israel.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of HaRav David Jemal ZT”L. He was approximately 70, and was Niftar from COVID-19. Rav Jemal was the longtime Rabbi at Kehillat Har Lebanon on Avenue S and East 9th Street in Flatbush, and was loved by all. His passing is a devastating blow to the entire Brooklyn Sephardic Jewish Community. When asking anyone if they could describe Rav Jemal, they all said the same thing: He would literally always be seen with a smile on his face, his life full of Simchas Hachayim and Simchas Hatorah.

Dear Members of the Lakewood kehillah and beyond, COVID-19 has impacted us in unprecedented ways, bringing illness and death along with paralysis of community life. Antibody testing is now available and many in our community have had antibody testing done. Antibody testing can help us identify those who have had COVID-19 illness whose blood plasma may be useful to help treat sick patients. The antibody test is a blood test that is different than the nasal swab test that is done to confirm an active COVID-19 infection. We urge everyone in our community to know that although antibody testing may have benefit in the future, the antibody test has several serious limitations. PLEASE NOTE: The presence of antibodies DOES NOT necessarily mean that you are immune to the COVID-19 virus.

Israel’s Health Ministry published morbidity data on Sunday on coronavirus fatalities in Israel, which totaled 199 at the time of the report. Currently, the locality with over 5,000 residents with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases is the town of Deir al-Assad in the Galil, with 150 confirmed cases in its population of 12,435. Israel Police put Deir al-Asad and Bi’ina, an adjacent town, into lockdown last week and has since removed the lockdown. Bnei Brak is now in second place of large cities with high rates of infection, with 2,747 confirmed cases in its population of 195,298.

Ahead of Israel’s 72nd Yom Ha’atzmaut on Tuesday night and Wednesday, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics published data on Israel’s population. Israel’s population grew by 171,000 people from Yom Ha’atzmauut of 2019 to a total of 9,190,000 million. In the past year, 180,000 babies were born, 44,000 people died and 32,000 people made aliyah. A total of 74% of Israel’s population are Jews, 21% are Arabs and the remaining 5% are “other.” Of the Jewish population, 78% are “sabras” – born in Israel – and 12 % are olim. Since Israel was founded, 3.3 million people have made aliyah to Israel. The population is expected to reach 11.1 million in 2030 and is expected to surpass 15 million in 2048 when Israel turns 100. Israel’s population in 1948 was 806,000 people.

The U.S. Census Bureau needs more time to wrap up the once-a-decade count because of the coronavirus, opening the possibility of delays in drawing new legislative districts that could help determine what political party is in power, what laws pass or fail and whether communities of color get a voice in their states. The number of people counted and their demographics guide how voting districts for the U.S. House and state legislatures are redrawn every 10 years. The monthslong delay in census data could make a divisive process more complicated, potentially forcing lawmakers into costly special sessions to complete the work or postponing some primary elections.

Cindy Parkhurst could have stayed home collecting most of her pay while the Ford plant where she normally works remains closed due to coronavirus fears. Instead, she along with hundreds of workers at Ford, General Motors, Toyota and other companies has gone back to work to make face shields, surgical masks and ventilators in a wartime-like effort to stem shortages of protective gear and equipment. “I didn’t give it a second thought,” said Parkhurst, 55, a tow motor driver who is now helping Ford and its partner 3M manufacture and ship respirators.
