A new salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry has sickened at least seven people in six states, health officials said Monday. Two cases were identified in Missouri, and one each in Florida, Illinois, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. People got sick in February and March of this year, the CDC said. They all had the same strain of salmonella — a version that has been traced to hatcheries in the past. The investigation is continuing, health officials said. Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections in the United States every year, and recent outbreaks have been tied to sources such as cucumbers, eggs, unpasteurized milk, fresh basil, geckos and pet bearded dragons.

In a strong statement, MK Yaakov Asher of United Torah Judaism (UTJ), who also serves as Chairman of the Knesset’s Interior Committee, issued a clear ultimatum: If the Israeli government fails to pass the new draft law regulating the status of yeshiva students by the middle of the upcoming summer Knesset session, his party will face a serious dilemma about continuing in the coalition.

In a historic first, conservative leader Friedrich Merz ’s bid to become Germany’s 10th chancellor since World War II failed by six votes in parliament on Tuesday, a stunning defeat as he had been widely expected to win smoothly. A candidate for chancellor has never failed to win on the first ballot since the end of the war. The loss triggered a stock market slide: the DAX, the index of major German companies, was down 1.8% following the vote. Merz needed a majority of 316 out of 630 votes. He only received 310 votes — well short of the 328 seats held by his coalition, which is also one of the slimmest postwar majorities. Because the vote was held by secret ballot, it was not immediately clear — and might never be known — who had defected from Merz’s camp.

Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu arrived at the IDF Headquarters Bunker in Tel Aviv to oversee the Yemeni strikes, joining Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Defence Minister Israel Katz, who were already present at the facility monitoring developments.

Following two decades of stalled proposals and unrealized plans, restoration efforts officially began Monday morning at the Kosel Hakotton, nestled in the Muslim Quarter of Yerushalayim’s Old City. The project moved forward after receiving direct authorization from Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu.
The Kosel Hakotton, situated just north of the main Kosel plaza near the Iron Gate, has long been revered for its spiritual and historical importance. Despite repeated calls for its renovation over the years, progress had been hindered by ongoing political sensitivities and security challenges.
