Senate Republicans said they are pushing ahead on President Donald Trump’sbig bill of tax breaks and spending cuts this week, even though they’re punting some of the most difficult decisions — including the costs and how to pay for the multitrillion-dollar package — until later. The Senate GOP’s budget framework would be the companion to the House Republicans’ $4.5 trillion tax cuts package that also calls for slashing some $2 trillion from health care and other programs. If the Senate can move the blueprint forward, it edges Trump’s allies on Capitol Hill closer to a compromise setting the stage for a final product in the weeks ahead.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio travels this week to a gathering of top diplomats from NATO countries and is sure to find allies that are alarmed, angered and confused by the Trump administration’s desire to reestablish ties with Russia and its escalating rhetorical attacks on longtime transatlantic partners. Allies are deeply concerned by President Donald Trump’s readiness to draw closer to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who sees NATO as a threat, amid a U.S. effort to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine. Recent White House comments and insults directed at NATO allies Canada and Denmark — as well as the military alliance itself — have only increased the angst, especially as new U.S. tariffs are taking effect against friends and foes alike.

Former President Donald Trump praised Wisconsin voters on Tuesday for approving a constitutional amendment that cements the requirement for voter ID in the state.
“VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT,” the 45th and 47th president posted on Truth Social.
“This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT. IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!” he continued.

China conducted military drills around Taiwan for a second day Wednesday, focusing on the Taiwan Strait — a crucial conduit for international trade separating the self-governing island democracy from China. The Strait Thunder-2025A drills were held in the middle and southern areas of the strait, a People’s Liberation Army spokesperson said. Taiwan’s military said that it was closely monitoring the drills, but there was nothing unusual on the island of 23 million people that China claims as its own territory.

Tesla sales declined in the first three months of the year, another sign that Elon Musk’s once high-flying electric car company is struggling to attract buyers. The drop of 13% is likely due to combination of factors, including its aging lineup, competition from rivals and a backlash from Musk’s embrace of right wing politics. It also is a warning that the company’s first-quarter earnings report later this month could disappoint investors. Tesla reported deliveries of 336,681 globally in the January to March quarter. The figure was down from sales of 387,000 in the same period a year ago. The decline came despite deep discounts, zero financing and other incentives. Analysts polled by FactSet expected much higher deliveries of 408,000.

Mayor Eric Adams took sharp aim at former Governor Andrew Cuomo during his weekly Q&A with reporters on Tuesday, targeting one of Cuomo’s key mayoral campaign boasts—his management expertise. “You mean the management he did with the nursing homes?” Adams said, alluding to Cuomo’s controversial pandemic directive that prevented nursing homes from refusing patients with COVID-19. He didn’t stop there, adding, “Or probably the management he did with the bail reform, is that what you’re talking about? That caused the ruckus we’re facing? Is that good management?” Driving the point home, Adams contrasted the roles of mayor and governor, stating, “You can’t just hide out in a mansion.” Cuomo’s campaign spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, fired back, defending the former governor’s record.

The Honenu legal aid organization expressed outrage at the Supreme Court’s decision this week to reduce the sentences of two Palestinians convicted of participating in a violent lynching of a Jewish family that mistakenly entered an Arab village in northern Israel during Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021. One of the terrorists was originally sentenced to seven years in prison, and the Supreme Court reduced his sentence to three years and four months. The sentence of another terrorist, which was initially four years in prison, was shortened to two years and nine months. According to the indictment, the Jewish family got lost and mistakenly entered the village, where they were brutally attacked by a mob of dozens of Arabs who threw stones at their vehicle.

The Skverer chassidus is reeling after the sudden and tragic passing of Rav Yitzchok Spitzer zt”l, one of the prominent dayanim of the Skverer kehillah in New Square. He was 67 years old.
Rav Spitzer collapsed in the midst of his avodas hakodesh of certifying the kashrus of a private mikvah in the community. Despite immediate efforts to revive him, he was niftar on the spot, leaving behind a devastated family and a community in mourning.
The levayah was held on Tuesday, departing from the main Skverer Beis Medrash. Rav Spitzer will be laid to rest in the beis hachayim of New Square.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett officially filed paperwork on Tuesday to register a new political party, currently listed under the provisional title “Bennett 2026.”
A spokesperson on Bennett’s behalf clarified, “if and when it is decided to actually run in the elections, an announcement will be made on the matter.”
Bennett appears to be laying the groundwork for a return to the political arena, targeting the upcoming Knesset elections. He has already begun forming a strategic team of advisors to guide his potential campaign. Recent internal polling, which shows his prospective party securing over 20 Knesset seats—primarily drawing support from the center-left—has further bolstered his efforts.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yisroel Katz, declared Wednesday morning that the military campaign in Gaza is intensifying. The expanded operation includes the mass relocation of Gazan civilians away from active combat areas, the destruction of terrorist elements and infrastructure, and the capture of large swaths of territory. These areas will be incorporated into Israel’s security buffer to safeguard both Israeli troops and nearby communities.“I call on the residents of Gaza to act now to remove Hamas and return all the hostages. This is the only way to end the war,” Katz added.
Meanwhile, Palestinian Arab media sources reported that Israeli tanks and troops began making headway into central and eastern parts of Rafah earlier in the day.

The United States is increasing its military presence in the Middle East against the backdrop of growing tensions with Iran and continued US strikes on the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the deployment of additional forces to the region, including increasing the number of aircraft carriers in the Middle East to two, along with additional aircraft. The USS Carl Vinson is expected to arrive in the region after completing exercises in the Indo-Pacific and the duration of the Harry S. Truman’s stay in the Middle East has been extended, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced on Tuesday. “Secretary of Defense Hegseth continues to make clear that, should Iran or its proxies threaten U.S.
