With Purim here, we are preparing to fulfill the beautiful mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim, ensuring that those in need can celebrate with dignity and simcha. But just as in business, where one carefully considers where to invest for the greatest return, tzedakah should be given with the same level of thoughtfulness. After all, when giving tzedakah, the goal is not just to give—it’s to make a real impact. That’s why this Purim, Mishkan Yosef is a tzedakah worth serious consideration. A highly regarded organization, Mishkan Yosef ensures that your donation goes directly to true aniyim, talmidei chachomim, who are struggling with basic living expenses. These are families of lomdei Torah who devote their lives to learning but are in real financial need.

According to The New York Times, the university disclosed that penalties range from “multiyear suspensions, temporary degree revocations and expulsion.”
A university spokesperson, citing federal privacy regulations, chose not to reveal the identities of the students who faced these sanctions. It is still unknown how many individuals have been affected by these measures.

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to implement the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 within the next few days, according to two sources familiar with White House discussions, which would allow the government to utilize wartime powers for accelerating the removal of illegal immigrants, the NY Post reports.
During his campaign, President Trump had pledged to invoke the long-standing law to expel illegal migrants from countries considered “enemy nations” if they are seen as a danger to the U.S., without needing a ruling from an immigration judge.

President Donald Trump stated today that his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un remains strong, reflecting on their several summits during his first term. He once again referred to North Korea as a “nuclear power.”
When asked by reporters during a meeting in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte if he plans to reconnect with Kim, Trump responded: “I have a great relationship with Kim Jong Un, and we’ll see what happens, but certainly he’s a nuclear power.”
On January 20, during his second inauguration, Trump described North Korea as a “nuclear power,” prompting speculation about whether he would prioritize arms control talks instead of focusing on denuclearization if he were to reengage with Pyongyang.

Today, a group of demonstrators stormed Trump Tower in New York City, demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University protest organizer who had been detained.
The protest was sparked by intense criticism of the Trump administration’s decision to detain Khalil, leading to a legal struggle and daily demonstrations in New York since his arrest on Motzoei Shabbos.
The anti-Zionist organization Jewish Voice for Peace shared images showing protesters chanting inside the lobby of the Midtown Manhattan building.
“Free Mahmoud, free them all,” the protesters shouted.

Footage has surfaced showing Iran’s Chief Rabbi Yehuda Gerami reading Megillas Esther at the kever of Mordechai and Esther in Hamadan, Iran on leil Purim tonight.
Rabbi Gerami and his followers were also seen dancing outside the kever complex before Mincha. The rabbi then proceeded to read Megillas Esther after Maariv.
Mordechai and Esther are believed to be buried in a mausoleum located in Hamadan, thought to be the ancient city of Shushan mentioned in Megillas Esther. This tradition, however, is not accepted by all beyond the Iranian Jewish community.
Iran is home to approximately 8,500 Jews, with the majority residing in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz.

The average rate on a 30-year mortgage in the U.S. edged higher this week, ending a seven-week slide that helped ease borrowing costs for home shoppers leading into the spring homebuying season. The rate averaged 6.65% this week, up from 6.63% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. A year ago, it averaged 6.74%. Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular with homeowners seeking to refinance their home loan to a lower rate, also ticked up this week. The average rate rose to 5.8% from 5.79% last week. A year ago, it averaged 6.16%, Freddie Mac said. Mortgage rates are influenced by several factors, including bond market investors’ expectations for future inflation, global demand for U.S. Treasurys and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy decisions.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reversed his stance dramatically today, announcing that he would cast his vote in favor of allowing Republicans to move forward with their plan to prevent a partial government shutdown set to take place at midnight on Friday.
Schumer (D-NY) explained that blocking the Republican proposal would ultimately grant President Trump too much power, a risk that outweighed the consequences of passing the temporary GOP spending resolution.

Omer Shem Tov, a survivor of Hamas captivity, addressed a rally in Herzliya this evening. He was joined by his friends, Maya and Itay Regev, who were also kidnapped with him during the Nova music festival and released as part of a deal with Hamas in November 2023. Since Omer’s kidnapping, his hometown of Herzliya has hosted a weekly rally every Thursday at the Dancers’ Square. At the event, Omer removed his portrait alongside Maya and Itay.
“Blessed is He who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this time,” Omer began his emotional speech. “I am Omer Shem Tov, and I am free. I have no experience on stage, and the last time I stood on a stage was on Hamas’s stage, so forgive me if I’m emotional about this moment.”

Steel and aluminum are ubiquitous in Americans’ lives. A stainless steel refrigerator holds aluminum soda cans. A stainless steel drum tumbles inside an aluminum washing machine. They’re the metals used in cars and airplanes, phones and frying pans, skyscrapers and zippers. That’s why President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports — which went into effect Wednesday — could have widespread impact on manufacturers and consumers. Here are some of the industries and products that rely on aluminum and steel: Construction The construction industry uses about one-third of all U.S. steel shipments, more than any other industry, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Rabbonim from Yerushalayim and other cities have urged people to avoid traveling between cities on Friday, recommending that if travel is absolutely necessary, it should be done in the morning hours.
This year, the majority of Israel will observe Purim on Friday, while in Yerushalayim and a few other locations, the Yom Tov is on Shabbos and Sunday, for a Purim Meshulash.
This cautionary advice has been issued due to concerns that there could be severe traffic congestion on the highways, particularly given the timing of the Yom Tov.
