On Tuesday night, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir instructed the military’s Human Resources Directorate to significantly ramp up efforts to conscript chareidim in light of the expanding Gaza ground operation and the broader demands of the ongoing war.
Since the summer of 2024, the IDF has issued 24,000 draft notices aimed at tens of thousands of eligible chareidi men. However, only a small percentage have responded positively and agreed to enlist.

The Federal Reserve could keep its key rate unchanged for several more months as it evaluates the impact of President Donald Trump’s widespread tariffs on hiring and inflation, some economists say, even as the White House pushes for a rate cut. The Fed is nearly certain to keep its rate unchanged when it concludes its latest policy meeting Wednesday. Chair Jerome Powell and other Fed officials have signaled that they want to see how the duties — including 145% on all imports from China — impact consumer prices and the economy. The central bank’s caution could lead to more conflict between the Fed and the Trump administration.

Attacks by Ukrainian long-range drones caused flight disruption at Moscow’s main airports for a third straight day on Wednesday, authorities said, as Russia prepared to receive the Chinese president and other foreign leaders for the annual Victory Day military parade in Red Square. Russian flag carrier Aeroflot canceled more than 100 flights to and from Moscow, while more than 140 flights were delayed as planes were repeatedly grounded, flight data showed. Russian air defenses repelled an attack by nine drones close to the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

Governor Kathy Hochul made it clear that she’s not worried about a potential 2026 challenge from Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, declaring, “Bring it on!”
During an appearance on CNN, Hochul, who is seeking re-election for a second term, was asked whether she felt threatened by Stefanik’s possible candidacy. She brushed it off, arguing that President Donald Trump has damaged the Republican Party’s image in New York.
“Donald Trump has made sure that the Republican Party brand is so tainted in New York that no matter who runs against me they will have the baggage of explaining why people’s prices went up, why they lost health care, why they lost Medicaid, why they lost education—all to fund tax breaks for the wealthiest,” Hochul said.

An F/A-18 fighter jet landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea went overboard, forcing its two pilots to eject, a defense official told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The incident Tuesday marks the latest mishap to mar the deployment of the Truman, which has been essential in the airstrike campaign by the United States against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Oman’s foreign minister both said that a ceasefire had been reached with the Houthis, who would no longer target ships in the Red Sea corridor — something not immediately acknowledged by the rebels. Meanwhile, the Houthis continue to assess the damage after daytime Israeli airstrikes targeted Yemen’s rebel-held capital of Sanaa.

Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in Paris on Wednesday for talks with President Emmanuel Macron. It’s his first trip to Europe since taking office in January, and a possible opening to broader ties with Western countries. It also comes amid renewed sectarian bloodshed in Syria, where al-Sharaa took power after his Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led an offensive that toppled former President Bashar Assad in December. Assad, a member of Syria’s Alawite minority, ruled for more than two decades. Al-Sharaa is scheduled to meet with Macron early evening, according to Syrian state media.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is set to host the leaders of China, Brazil and other heads of states for festivities on Friday marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Victory Day, which is celebrated in Russia on May 9, has become the country’s most important secular holiday. A massive parade through Red Square and other ceremonies underline Moscow’s efforts to project its power and cement the alliances it has forged while seeking a counterbalance to the West amid the 3-year-old war in Ukraine. “For Putin, this day is important as a demonstration how broad a coalition backing Russia is,” said political analyst Nikolai Petrov.

China announced a barrage of measures meant to counter the blow to its economy from U.S. President Donald Trump ’s trade war, as the two sides prepared for talks later this week. Beijing’s central bank governor and other top financial officials outlined plans Wednesday to cut interest rates and reduce bank reserve requirements to help free up more funding for lending. They also said the government would increase the amount of money available for factory upgrades and other innovation and for elder care and other service businesses. Trump’s tariffs, set as high as 145% on imports from China, have begun to take a toll on its export-dependent economy at a time when it’s already under pressure from a prolonged downturn in the property sector.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), a member of the far-left progressive “Squad” in Congress with a long history of anti-Israel statements, is fundraising via text message blast for the New Yorkers for Lower Costs super PAC tied to Zohran Mamdani’s campaign for New York City mayor, the New York Post reported.
A self-identified Democratic Socialist, Mamdani, who is of Indian-Ugandan heritage, is currently a New York state representative. Both he and Tlaib support the movement to boycott Israel.
Mamdani wrote in October that “I will always be clear in my language and based in facts: Israel is committing a genocide.” He has also accused Israel of massacring babies in Gaza.

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — National Unity party chief Benny Gantz remarked on Tuesday that Israel should not have fully withdrawn from Gaza in 2005, and that the notions of further Israeli withdrawals or Palestinian statehood were “disconnected from the security reality,” according to a Times of Israel report. During a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu discussed developments in the Middle East, the Prime Minister’s Office in Yerushalayim said.
According to the Hebrew-language PMO statement, the two leaders also “exchanged warm greetings on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II,” which Moscow is set to celebrate on Friday with the annual Victory Day parade in the capital.
Netanyahu was said to have “emphasized the decisive contribution of the Red Army to the victory over the Nazis, highlighting the significant role played by the many Jewish commanders and soldiers in the war.”

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Senior members of the charedi parties are demanding a tougher stance to promote a draft law and regulate the status of yeshi

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu scheduled an urgent meeting on Tuesday evening with Chareidi political leaders, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, and Likud MK Yuli Edelstein, who serves as the chairman of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, which has been holding discussions on drafting a Chareidi draft law in recent months. The meeting follows the announcement by Chareidi parties earlier this week that they will no longer vote with the coalition due to the lack of progress on the legislation of a Chareid draft law. In the wake of the decision, coalition members were forced to withdraw bills slated for a vote in the Knesset on Wednesday.
