The Flatbush community as well as the rest of the world suffered a tremendous loss on Friday afternoon, when long time Flatbush resident Rabbi Luzy Steinmetz Z”L was Niftar after battling a long illness. Luzy may have just been in his mid forties, but his accomplishments surpassed his age. He was a long standing Mispallel at Khal Bnei Torah led by Rav Bentzion Shiffenbauer. He was a graduate of Yeshiva Torah Temimah and a talmid of Yeshivahs Mir in Yerushalayim and Yeshiva Torah Vodas in Flatbush. Luzy encompassed all 3 pillars that we learn about in Pirkei Avos; Torah-Avodah-Gemilas Chessed. He embodied Torah as a long time Daf Yomi Magid shuir, as well as always ready to enlighten his friends and those around him with a good vort. His Avodah was something to admire.

Rabbi Pinchos Aharon Weberman, one of the founders of the Jewish community in Miami Beach, Florida who served as a rov for 62 years, passed away on Wednesday, 28 Tammuz, 5782. He was 92. Rabbi Weberman was born and raised in new York, and after getting married he was introduced to the Lubavitch Rebbe and developed a very close relationship. The Rebbe encouraged him to use his talents and wisdom to help build a Jewish community and in 1960 he chose Miami Beach, with the Rebbe’s encouragement. At the time, Miami had zero Jewish infrastructure and no kosher food. He was extremely influential in starting the first Jewish institutions there. His children were from the first students in the Lubavitch Educational Center (LEC).

YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of Rav Shlomo Carlebach zt”l, the former mashgiach at Yeshivas Rabeinu Chaim Berlin. He was 96. Rav Carlebach was born in 1925 in Hamburg, Germany. His father, Rav Yosef, was the last chief rabbi of the city. The Carlebach family was deported in 1941 along with the rest of the Jewish community to a concentration camp in Latvia. Tragically, Rav Shlomo’s parents and three of his sisters were murdered by the Nazis in 1942. Several other siblings were able to escape to England and then-Palestine. After four years spent in nine different concentration camps, Rav Shlomo was liberated and made his way to America, where he joined Yeshivas Rabeinu Chaim Berlin and learned under the tutelage of Rav Yitzchok Hutner zt”l.

The frum kehilla in Antwerp was engulfed in mourning on Wednesday upon hearing the tragic news of the death of Malka Schweitzer, a’h, at the age of 33. The nifteres, a mother of seven who developed life-threatening complications after giving birth nine days ago, passed away a day after her baby’s bris. YWN regrets to inform you of the sudden Petira of Hagaon HaRav Shmuel Yehuda Levin ZT”L, the Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe Chicago. He was 63. The Rosh Yeshiva suffered a massive heart attack at his home on Moztei Shabbos. Chicago Hatzolah Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he was tragically Niftar. He was the son of Hagaon HaRav Avrohom Chaim Levin ZT”L, the previous Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe Chicago, who was Niftar 4 years ago. Additional details will be published when they become available. The former head of ZAKA, Yehudah Meshi-Zahav, passed away overnight Tuesday in the Herzog Medical Center in Jerusalem, where he has been hospitalized since last year. Prior to being hospitalized, serious and multiple accusations of wrongdoing were made against him after it was announced that he was chosen as a recipient of the Israel Prize. He subsequently forfeited the Israel Prize and stepped down as the head of ZAKA. The niftar left behind a wife and seven children. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

YWN regrets to inform you of the tragic Petira of Hagaon HaRav Michoel Bender ZATZAL. He was 71 years old. Rav Michoel suffered a heart attack and was Niftar in Monsey on Tuesday afternoon. The Niftar was the longtime Mashgiach at Yeshiva Bais Binyomim (Stamford Yeshiva), and was one of the secret Tzadikei Hador. Those who were Zoche to know him, say that there isn’t enough ink and paper to describe the Tzidkus and secret Chasadim that he spent his life doing. He was an extraordinary Oved Hashem, as he spent his life below the radar with extreme humility. He was a son-in-law of the late Stamford Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon HaRav Simcha Schustal ZATZAL.

We regret to inform you of the petira of Rabbi Pinchas Stolper zt’l at the age of 90. Rabbi Pinchas Stolper, internationally renowned pioneer in Jewish youth work, was widely respected as a lecturer, teacher, educator, author and thinker. Rabbi Stolper was the founder of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY) which he served for 25 years as National Director – from its infancy through its seminal role in the international Teshuva movement. During more than forty years of working with Jewish youth, he met and counseled thousands of young people. One of the world’s largest and most respected youth movements today, NCSY serves over 40,000 young people in the United States, Canada and Israel with fresh, innovative and creative educational programs.

YWN regrets to inform you of the passing of the admor of Kavunas HaLev, HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Zev Lichter, zt”l. He was 85. The Rebbe served thousands of followers in his position for over four decades. Born in 1937 in Galicia to his parents, R’ Noach z”l and Mamal a”h, he escaped from the Nazis along with his family to America. The rebbe married Rebbetzin Henya Kreindel, the daughter of the Krasna Ruv, HaRav Hillel Lichtenstein zt”l. The rebbetzin was nifteres in 2015. After the petirah of his father-in-law, Rav Shmuel Zev was named Rebbe, with the kehilla being named Kavunas HaLev, after the Krasna Ruv’s sefer. The levaya began at 10 am Friday morning at the Kavunas HaLev bais medrash on 43rd Street, with the kevura to take place in the Krasna Chelka of Beth Moses Cemetery.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Rabbi Zechariah Wallerstein, a world famous inspirational and motivational speaker and educator. He was approximately 64-years-old. As was reported recently on YWN, Tehillim was requested for Rabbi Wallerstein, who was suffering from an illness for the past few years. Sadly, he was Niftar at his Flatbush home at around 5:00AM, Monday morning. The Niftar had become an icon in the Jewish world, delivering thousands of speeches around the globe. He had an over-three-decade career in chinuch. A dynamic educator-with his trademark passion, clarity, and love, touched the hearts and souls of thousands of students from all shades of the religious spectrum.
