YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of Reb Moshe Bertram z”l, who was niftar on Wednesday in Lakewood. He was 82. Reb Moshe z”l was born in the Bertch ghetto in April 1940 and went on to survive the brutal conditions of Siberia through World War II before arriving in the U.S. in 1949. The founder of Bertram Foods, Reb Moshe z”l was scrupulous almost to a fault. Just a week ago, he mentioned to his son Shimmy that he was confident he had never taken “a nickel that didn’t belong to me.” A lifelong Bluzhever chasid, he unwaveringly followed the advice and guidance of his rebbe and rabbanim, and established doros of boys and girls who are following in his upright path. YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of HaRav Avrohom Eliezer Kviat ZT”L, the Mora D’asra of the “Agudah of 18th Avenue”, and the Rosh Yeshiva of Tiferes Shmuel Alexander. He was 72. The Niftar had been serving as the Rov of the Shul since the Petira of his father, HaRav Dovid Kviat ZT”L, around 14 years ago – as reported by YWN. Rav Dovid also served as a Magid shiur for decades in the Mirrer Yeshiva, as well as the Mechaber of dozens of Seforim “Sukkas Dovid”. A terrible tragedy struck the Baltimore Jewish community on Monday night when a bochur from Ner Yisroel was struck and killed by a vehicle on Reisterstown Road. Emergency personnel was called to the scene on 1800 block of Reisterstown after 22-year-old Chaim Moshe Cohen Z”L was struck from behind by a 2017 Dodge Charger as he rode a bike northbound along the roadway. Despite valiant efforts, paramedics were forced to declared Chaim z”l deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and the Baltimore Police Crash Team continues to investigate the terrible tragedy.

YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of Harav Shmuel Shmelke Leifer zt”l of Boro Park. Throughout his life, Rav Shmuel was a sought-after speaker, whose sagely advice was absorbed by thousands of people. He was particularly vocal about his opposition to yeshivos turning bochurim away, which he strongly believed them astray. He was also the rav hamachshir on many kosher eateries in Boro Park for several decades. The levayah is scheduled to take place Monday morning at his Beis Medrash at 16th Avenue & 55th in Boro Park. The olam hatorah and Sefardi community in particular have been struck by the devastating loss of HaRav Shimon Badani zt”l, the nasi of the Moetzes Chachmei HaTorah of Shas, on Wednesday morning about 8 a.m. at Sheba Hospital in Tel HaShomer. He was 94. The levaya will begin at 1 p.m. from Kollel Torah V’Chayim on Rechov Rabi Akiva in Bnei Brak and will continue to the Ponevezh beis hakevaros in the city, where HaRav Badani, z’tl, will be buried next to his late Rebbetzin. HaRav Badani, z’tl, succeeded HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen zt”l as nasi just a few months ago, and now leaves a gaping leadership void in the Sefardic world. Rav Shalom zt”l had led the Moetzes Chachmei Hatorah for nine years following the petirah of Chacham Ovadiah Yosef zt”l.

HaGaon HaTzaddik Yosef Lieberman, z’tl, Rosh Yeshivas Shomrei HaChomos and the Rav of the Sadigura Beis Medrash in Jerusalem was niftar on Shabbos morning at the age of 95. The nfitar, a descendant of the Chasan Sofer, was born in Pressburg, Slovakia. After he moved to Eretz Yisrael, he was appointed to serve as the Rosh Kollel of Shomrei HaChomos as well as the Rav of the Sadigura Beis Medrash. HaRav Lieberman, z’tl, was a renowned posek and authored the Mishnas Yosef series of sefarim. YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Reb Boruch Harar Z”L of Flatbush / Lakewood. He was approximately 85. Reb Boruch was part of a group of Moroccan Bochrim who had been brought from Morocco to the Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn by the venerable Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon HaRav Avraham Kalmanowitz ZATZAL. He never left the surroundings of the Yeshiva, where he raised a mishpacha of Bnei Torah – nearly all of whom are magidei Shiurim or in other chinuch capacities. For many years he owned a mattress company called Paradise Mattress in NY. He moved to Lakewood a number of years ago, returning to the Mirrer Yeshiva for Yomim Noraim each year, never wanting to miss Davening in his beloved Yeshiva.

The Olam HaTorah is reeling from the news of the petirah of HaGaon HaRav Mendel Schneur Zalman Atik, z’tl,  a close talmid of the Brisker Rav, z’tl and the Chazon Ish, z’tl, and one of the greatest Gaonim of the generation. The niftar, z’tl, who ceaselessly toiled in Torah for decades, passed away on his 94th birthday, on Shabbos Chanukah, at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. HaRav Atik, z’tl was born in the Old City of Jerusalem and learned in his youth in the Eitz Chaim Talmud Torah and yeshivah under HaGaon HaRav Isser Zalman Meltzer, z’tl, and later at Yeshivas Mir under HaGaon HaRav Eliezer Yehudah Finkel, zt’l, where he continued to learn after he married.

YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of Rebbetzin Fraida Milka Lavi a”h, the rebbetzin of the late Tosher Rebbe ZT”L. The rebbetzin is the daughter of Rav Mendel Hess zt”l of Montreal, and had previously been married to R’ Avraham Yizchak Hauer z”l of Williamsburg who was niftar many years ago in an accident in New Hampshire.
