Israeli Minister of Religious Affairs Michael Malkieli has formally written to the Mayor of Yerushalayim, Moshe Lion, requesting that he appoint members to a committee that will oversee the process of selecting the city’s new chief rabbis.
This marks the beginning of the process to appoint the new chief rabbis for Israel’s capital city.
At present, Yerushalayim does not have a chief rabbi following the completion of terms by Sephardic Chief Rabbi Rav Shlomo Moshe Amar and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Rav Aryeh Stern.
The upcoming elections for the position of chief rabbi in Yerushalayim are viewed as a pivotal moment, as they will set a precedent for similar elections in other cities across Israel in the coming months.

In a final effort before the impending Trump administration, the Biden White House is preparing to unveil an additional $1.25 billion in military aid for Ukraine.
This extensive aid package includes a variety of weaponry, such as systems for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It will also provide Stinger missiles and artillery rounds in both 155 mm and 105 mm calibers.
The announcement is expected to be made on Monday, according to a report from the Associated Press.
This new funding follows President Biden’s earlier announcement this month of a $988 million aid package, aimed at ensuring Ukraine “has the tools it needs to prevail in its fight against Russian aggression.”

“Lots of fun, the fireworks, lots of entertainment up until last year,” shared a woman from Freehold.

A Jeju Air flight carrying 181 passengers from Thailand to South Korea tragically crashed upon its arrival, crashing into a barrier and igniting in flames. The crash left all but two people presumed dead.
Authorities have indicated that a bird strike, along with challenging weather conditions, were likely factors in the crash, which caused passengers to be thrown from the plane and left the aircraft “almost completely destroyed,” according to officials from the fire department.
Footage captured the Jeju Air plane, arriving from Bangkok, landing on its underside at Muan International Airport. The plane skidded off the runway, emitting smoke from its engines, before crashing into a wall and erupting in flames.
