This week, readers across the globe were blown away by video footage of Rivky Gefner, a 17-year-old Israeli girl who has been courageously battling an aggressive form of cancer. “What feels like a lifetime ago but was only 2 weeks ago, I started having a lot of pain in my legs,” Rivky explained several days ago in her first appearance on Jewish news channels. “I was checked out by medical professionals, and they discovered something I never could have anticipated- That I have cancer.” The surgeries and treatments needed to save Rivky’s life have been estimated at over a whopping $75,000, but to her parents’ utter devastation, they don’t have the resources to pay for the treatment needed to save their daughter’s life. They are living what is any parent’s worst nightmare.

Readers around the world were disturbed last week to learn the story of Mordechai Freuchter, a young father of 5 who has been, according to his family and several rabbanim, falsely imprisoned. Freuchter has endured severe stress and been harassed by other prison mates due to his religious observance.  The family has now publicly announced that Mordechai has now suffered a stroke, and is wheelchair-bound. Shockingly, the prison will not allow him to be released in order to receive an MRI. They are powerless to hire a lawyer to fight the battle to allow him out for treatment, as they cannot afford the fees. The trial has been postponed for months for the same reason.

Neighbors in an Israeli town looked on in shock and horror not long ago, and police dragged a young religious father out of his home, and drove him away to jail. The man in question, as well as several rabbis, maintain that he has been falsely accused. His wife and five children were left behind in a state of shock and horror. The young father is still awaiting trial, and has endured shocking conditions in jail. Those close to the family say that his health is deteriorating rapidly and that they are concerned for his safety. A video from Rabbi Yaakov Zilberman of Jerusalem asks the public to please donate what they can toward legal fees, so that the man can have his trial and return home. If they do not afford the legal expenses they need, the man will die in jail.

My name is Moishy. I’m 7 and learn in 2nd grade.I was born with a rare liver condition, and I have to take tons of yucky medicines and drops every day. They taste really bad, but I know that they’re keeping me alive, so a long time ago, I learned to just swallow them without saying anything. In the last month, I heard lots of whispers about my “condition dee-tee-ree-or-ating. I don’t know exactly what it means, but I’ve been feeling really sick lately, and I know that my liver isn’t working anymore and that I need to have a liver transplant fast.Everyone is careful not to talk around me, but I know that without the transplant, I’m going to die. A liver transplant is the only thing that can keep me alive! My mommy told me that after my transplant, I’ll come home healthy again!

Limor Chabakuk, widow of one of the victims killed in the Elad attack, choked back tears as she spoke to news reporters’ microphones last week.  “Yonatan decided he was going to fight. He wanted to take the ax from their hands,” she told Y-Net News. It has been widely reported that it is due to Yonatan’s heroic struggle with the terrorists that many were able to escape. Hundreds visited the Chabakuk shiva, included government leaders, and respected Torah scholars. One of these visitors was Rebbetzin Tziporah (Heller) Gottlieb, who recalled the emotional visit to the Chabakuk family in a newsletter to the public. Limor was a student at Neve, a seminary known for students who uproot their lives to pursue Torah.

Just a few days have passed since the brutal Elad terror attack, and the terrorists have now been captured.  Police identified the two suspects as 19 year-old As’sad al-Rifa’i and 20-year-old Subhi Abu Shqeir. Though the perpetrators are no longer on the loose, for some families, the terror attack is still very much in motion: Another morning begins and another camera crew has arrived at the doorstep of the Gol family. The muffled sobs of children fill the air. Gol’s widow, a mother of 5, is now left to raise their children alone. Her husband Boaz had been the provider for the house, before he was murdered in the Elad attack.  “My husband was a good man,” she says, through tears.
