Readers around the world have followed the story of the Kirschbaum family, who lost a son in the Meron Lag Ba’Omer tragedy. Their lost son, however, is not the main source of the headlines: Six-year-old Malki Kirschbaum has a severe case of liver cancer, and doctors advised the family to fly from Israel to America as soon as possible for a full liver transplant. Despite being a family of modest means, barely up from the shiva of the sudden loss of their teenage son, Mr & Mrs. Kirschbaum booked the family tickets to America and scheduled the life-saving procedure. Unclear as to how they would cover the costs, they resolved that above all else, they must save their daughter’s life. The Kirschbaums landed in Pittsburgh today, and now face a terrifying predicament.

Last month, the Kirschbaum family’s suffering was on the lips of nearly every Jew in the world, as they mourned the loss of their teenage son. Nachman (15) was crushed to death in what is now being referred to as the “Meron tragedy.”   The Kirschbaums flew at the beginning of this week to America in order to get an emergency liver transplant for their six-year-old daughter Michali. Before leaving the country, however, they made one very important stop – to the beis hakevorim.   With her severely enlarged abdomen, little Michali wept & prayed by the fresh grave of her beloved older brother. The family asked him to be a meilitz yosher on their behalf, as they venture across the world to save Michali’s life.

When Leah R* was only one and a half years old, her parents were in a terrible car accident where they were instantly killed. Miraculously, little Leah survived without a scrape.  “Ever since I can remember, I’ve been completely on my own in the world,” writes Leah, now 22, in a recent letter where she attempts to describe the lonely existence of having lost both parents at such a young age. “I try so hard to remember my parents’ faces, to remember the motherly love and devotion that I must have once been blissfully privileged to call my own…But it was too long ago. I was passed along from home to home my whole life, more than I can remember. I always felt so lost, and so alone.

A recent horror story out of Jerusalem highlights the importance of doing a full background check before hiring any workers. Yisroel Rothman, a young father of 4, hired a contractor to help him expand his small apartment to better accommodate his kids. Little did he know, the man that he hired was a convicted criminal, who had no intention of improving his home, and every intention of scamming him out of his money. Shortly after his work began, the contractor began asking for more money. He began to extort the family financially and, eventually, to make threats against their lives. The couple was terrified and sought legal counsel, but were told that without a significant amount of money their only choice was to leave.

Over one week ago, five children from the large and well-known Elchadad family of Bnei Brak went to Meron together to celebrate Lag Baomer.    But only three made it home.   Moshe Mordechai (18) and Yosef Dovid (12) were only a few steps ahead of their younger brothers when they became ensnared in the entanglement of people that night. By nothing short of a miracle, the younger ones behind them came out completely alive and unharmed. But in a horrific tragedy that has shattered their entire family, Moshe Mordechai and Yosef Dovid were trampled to death side by side.    “Sometimes, difficult things happen that we don’t understand,” said the father of the boys to reporters in an incredible interview.   “I had five sons there. From them, three were saved and two were killed.
