Her husband walked out the door, leaving her alone with her 7 children. She has been raising these children alone, doing whatever it takes to take care of them. To make matters worse, her ex-husband is no longer frum and is trying to entice the children to leave the Torah as well. Mrs. R_____ is fighting on all fronts. She must provide for her children financially, so they have what they need, while also making her children feel the warm embrace of Hashem and Yiddishkeit, to help these children stay on the one true path. Very recently, Mrs. R_____ had a massive stroke that completely paralyzed half her body. This has now left her children alone! Abandoned! No longer can she work to provide for their finances!

Earlier this month, 46-year-old father of 7 Rabbi Yehoshua Dim began experiencing chest pains. He immediately went to see a doctor, who sent him for several tests. When the results came back, Yehoshua was relieved to be told that he was “completely healthy.” His family assumed the chest pains had been due to the stress of the upcoming wedding the Dims were making for their daughter. Last week, the Dims were experiencing a relatively normal pre-wedding evening. Mother Shayna was on the phone arranging the final details, and daughter Raizy was baking a cake for his chassan. When they heard a cry of pain from the other room followed by a thud, they rushed to see what had happened. Yehoshua Dim had died of a heart attack.

No one can deny it: Raising religious Jewish children in 2021 is harder than ever before. Mainstream culture grows farther and farther from traditional morality. Every kid with a phone has access to the entire world in the palm of their hand. And with the disruption and chaos of coronavirus, last year had devastating effects on the emotional health of students worldwide. Experts noted during the lockdowns that children in abusive and dysfunctional homes were suffering without the option of school as a safe haven. Others lost loved ones, and saw their family torn apart by grief. Jewish educators know: Emotional health is spiritual health.  If parents & teachers are going to reverse the damage and influences done to Jewish children in the coming school year, they will need a plan.

“Who are you? Why do you want to hurt us?” These among others, were the panicked questions Aharon Mann whispered into the phone just one month ago, standing in the darkness of his apartment. It was the middle of the night, and the daily threatening calls had become more threatening. First they began with an intimidating silence then hung up. But as time went on a voice began to detail horrific violence it promised it would inflict on the young frum father and his children. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, small business owners around the world were dealt a devastating blow. One such business owner was Israeli father of 2 Aharon Mann. Aharon owned a small corner store, and worked long, hard hours to support his family.

Tisha B’Av is a time to focus on the root causes of the Galus and work to rectify them so Moshiach can come. What was the cause of the exile?  Chazal (Midrash Tanchuma, Behar 1) are explicit: “The Holy One Blessed Be He said to Moshe Rabbeinu ‘Is it your desire that the nation should not go into exile? Then warn them about keeping Shmita.’” In fact the Torah (Vayikra 26:34-35) itself makes it clear that the years of desolation (Shmita) are an appeasement to the Land for the years of Shmita which were not kept properly in the days preceding the galus.  But how do we go about rectifying this sin? Are we farmers? Do we know the intricate halachos of this rare mitzvah?

Readers around the globe were moved this week by the tragic story and appalling photos of young Israeli mother of 5, Chaya Maryan.  Shortly after giving birth to her youngest child, Chaya was uncharacteristically lethargic. Doctors misdiagnosed her as simply being “depressed.” When the “depression” did not resolve itself she went for further testing and learned that she had stage 4 cancer.  Since then, the Maryan family has been thrown into a state of chaos. Chaya uses all of her strength to endure treatments, and her husband has left his job to take care of the children. She has now wasted away to a frighteningly thin and pale shadow of her former self. Doctors recently gave the family news which both thrilled and terrified them: They have a choice.
