Pesach is fast approaching. The klal is broken and hurting! The Rambam in Hilchos Tzedaka writes a list of the different levels of tzedaka that we should give. Who comes first, who comes next, et cetera. And others write a prioritized list as well. According to the Pele Yoetz, the poor and destitute of Israel have the status of “local poor people” – the highest level of tzedaka. In normal years, those blessed by Hashem with money would both give for maos chittin (money to buy matzos) and also have numerous guests at their table. This year, for many it is simply not possible to have guests. But we can create guests through donating extra, by making sure that the extremely poor in Yerushalayim have the wherewithal to feed their family for Yom Tov. Loan sharks. Nasty criminals who prey on vulnerable individuals who are desperate to borrow their money. They can appear initially friendly but eventually turn to harassment, intimidation, threats and violence to force their victims to pay back their debts at an exorbitant percentage.    When Avraham Tzaiger’s Israeli tech business started to become less lucrative at the dawn of the Corona crisis, he borrowed money from what he thought was a trustworthy individual with the intent of restructuring his business in a more profitable and proactive manner. He projected to start collecting a profit a year or two down the line so that he could continue to support his wonderful family.    But the “trustworthy individual” that Avraham borrowed funds from turned out to be dangerous.

A family of geirim, made Aliyah without knowing anyone. No family, no friends, no one. But in their heart they knew Israel was the right place to be, so they picked up and went. The whole family, the parents with their kids, they showed up in Israel, and started to settle in, with professional jobs and more. Then the coronavirus hit. It decimated their jobs. Their livelihood. Their ability to care for their children. These are true tzaddikim, with yiras shomayim, wonderful middos, and a number of pure children. And they cannot rely on their former family – their non-jewish relatives disowned them.

RESERVEDA crowd of devastated onlookers gathered in the street in Bnei Brak earlier this month, to say their final goodbyes to an inspirational young Torah scholar & father. Rabbi Yom Tov Cohen was not a man who let anything get in his way. Cohen transformed his life as a young adult in pursuit of truth, and became religious. He immersed himself so deeply in his studies that before long he was a talmid chacham. He married, and had 5 children together with his wife Sara. A severe case of diabetes, however, sent Rabbi Cohen’s life in an unexpected trajectory. The disease claimed his sight in one eye, as well as two of his legs.

“A few days ago, people came into the building and evicted the people davening there.” For more than a decade, Rabbi Yosef Halperin and his family have dedicated their lives to bringing the remaining Jews of Varna, Bulgaria back to Judaism. And they’ve had hundreds of incredible success stories. Rabbi Halperin and his family have a warmth and passion that has drawn many unaffiliated Jews close to their heritage. But because of recent events, the focus of their mission is about to change completely.  Much to the community’s horror, the anti-Semitic Bulgarian government has granted permission to a local contractor to take the only remaining shul in Varna which was not destroyed in the holocaust and to turn it into something far from holy: A casino.

Many of our readers remember when Hodaya Monsango’s face made the news. An acquaintance had offered the naive 26 year old young lady with special needs what sounded to her like a dream come true– To travel with their family on a vacation to Peru in exchange for babysitting assistance. Hodaya’s trusting nature lended her to say yes.  And that was her mistake. Hodaya hadn’t known that the “family” had smuggled illegal substances into her suitcase. To her horror, minutes after landing, she was forcibly taken away by the Peruvian police to be arrested. Moments later, she found herself sitting in a jail, staring back into the eyes of blood-thirsty criminals.Hodaya is a helpless, religious girl fending for herself in a foreign prison. She is miles away from home.

This bundle of joy, Hadas bas Orah, is only 3 years old. Already she has gone through 3 complex heart surgeries. And she still needs to go through more. This lovable 3 year old now needs a 4th surgery. She will need to be in the hospital for 2 months, and her family will need to be at her side, taking care of her, helping her, giving her the strength she needs to heal from the ordeal of yet another surgery.  CLICK HERE TO DONATE The family won’t have income while this little girl is healing. They also need help paying for the medical bills!

COVID-19 has destroyed so many people’s livelihoods. The lockdowns in Israel and the inability to work, to earn, to do anything, has completely decimated the poor and the not-so-poor in new ways never seen before. Please, hear the cry of your brothers and sisters in Israel and send financial help! The money raised will be distributed on Purim Day, making this a pure gift of matanos levyonim, a pure gift of tzedaka to help those less fortunate than you. Every donation to this cause will bring you countless zechusim and mitzvahs, for it will reach all of these cases. Give as much as you can, so that when the gabboim knock on the doors of these homes and give them an envelope full of hope and comfort, full of smiles, Hashem will remember you and your needs with a smile.
