Preparations have begun once again for one of the largest prayer events of the year: The gathering of the gedolei yisroel at the Kever HaShla on Rosh Chodesh Sivan.
The Tefilas HaShla is traditionally said by parents, on behalf of their children. The Shla writes “the most appropriate time to recite this prayer is on Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, for that is the month when Hashem gave us His Torah, and when we began to be called his children.”

Our future. Our responsibility.

Years ago, the “K” home in Jerusalem was a bustling hub of regular home life. A remarkable 17 children buzzed happily and out of its doors, each bringing his or her own unique personality to the large family. When the eldest child became seriously ill, however, the “K”s were shaken to their core. Tumors were found on his spinal cord and brain, and he was quickly admitted to the hospital.
The diagnosis of the origin of the tumors, however, was far more shocking than the family could have imagined. The boy had neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder which causes spinal tumors, and is only detected from adolescence or older. Mother Esther’s fears were multiplied – now she no longer had to worry about just her son, but all of her children.

The religious community of Tiveria was struck a devastating blow this month after the passing of beloved father of 5 Rabbi Dovid Sher a”h.
Rabbi Sher was known in the community as a loving father and hardworking mover, married to neighborhood ganenet “Morah” Tali. For the past few years, however, the family lived a secret life of difficulty. Diagnosed with a rare form of kidney disease, Rabbi Sher suffered from excruciating pain, and eventually became completely bedridden. He was forced to leave his career, and Tali did as well, in order to oversee his treatments and other medical needs. Before long, they were in the negative.

One Bnei Brak family lost everything last week after an electrical fire became an uncontrollable blaze. Eight children were rushed from the scene. All of their belongings, however, were destroyed.
Neighbors watched from the street as the fire resisted being controlled. One friend of the family commented that they are “lucky to be alive.”
Now that their gratitude to be alive has begun to wear off, however, the Barak parents and their children are left to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. The parents and eight of their ten children are currently living with family friends. With no appliances, clothing, or furniture of their own, they are unable to return home.

“Who would want to marry a girl like that?”
Insensitive comments like these – and worse – become commonplace for young women like Chaya Sofer. In many ways, she is a shadchan’s dream: a kind, intelligent girl, personifying the utmost in tznius and good middos.
Her past, however, has betrayed her: A few years ago, Chaya lost her father. Since his passing, her mother Devorah has raised and married off her six children alone. As they acclimated to life as a single-parent household, their grief took on an unexpected side effect: poverty.
This spring, Chaya became a kallah. Her engagement was a joyous occasion, yet the simcha was tinged with sadness. The Sofer family was reminded of their father’s absence more than ever.

Surrounded at all times by speculation and curiosity, it is an exclusive few who are able to permeate the inner workings of the home life of Rav Chaim Kanievsky. Regular audience with the Rav is often limited to close family members, and learning Torah with the Rav is nearly unheard of. This makes it all the more impressive that Rav Uri Tiger, a young man, has been hand-selected to aide Rav Kanievsky in the writing of his seforim. Though such a privilege would be expected to be extended to a much older man, yet Rav Tiger, a young father of six, has helped to author seforim such as Nezer HaChaim, Derech Ish, and more.

“He always told us it would be good,” says Bentzion Stern, with tears in his eyes. It is a painful sight: a young man addresses the camera, overwhelmed with grief. This is the touching video which surfaced on the internet last month. Its background story extends to two months ago, with the untimely passing of Rosh Kollel and father of 14 Rav Hillel Shalom Stern zt”l.

The following is an op-ed piece submitted on behalf of Alexander Kochman, a rabbi and father of 6 located in Givat Ze’ev, Israel:

Like any married couple with children, my wife and I have spent countless hours reflecting upon chinuch, the ways in which we would raise our children. We never anticipated, however, that I would get sick. And we never dreamed of the impact that would have upon our household.
