Israel’s government is working tirelessly to maintain the exemption for yeshiva students from mandatory IDF service, according to Shas chairman MK Aryeh Deri. In an interview published on Monday in Haderech, the Shas-affiliated newspaper, Deri emphasized that the government is doing “everything” in its power to achieve this goal.
Deri acknowledged that “despite it being difficult at this time to find a legal and agreed-upon solution,” he was following the directives of Shas’s rabbonim, who had instructed him “to make every effort so that a son of Torah, whose soul yearns for Torah study without exception, can study Torah without quotas or restrictions.”

A man was arrested after an alleged assault with a wooden stick outside the Silver Spring Jewish Center, a Frum Shul in Maryland’s Kemp Mill neighborhood, on Monday.
According to statements from witnesses and photos posted on a local Jewish group chat, which was shared with JNS, the man struck two Jews who left the building. The Shul is part of a complex that includes a day school and nursery, for children from age 2 until second grade. The latter has an armed guard.
Images shared on the chat show a man holding a wooden stake with a pointed edge walking on the street and, subsequently, being handcuffed by multiple Montgomery County Police Department officers wearing blue gloves.

Amidst the security tensions along the northern and southern borders of Eretz Yisroel, many questions have been directed to Rav Yitzchak Yosef regarding the observance of the mitzvah of sukkah during these times.
In a comprehensive teshuvah to residents of Akko, the Chief Rabbi gave clear guidelines to the Torah-observant public living in areas threatened by missile fire from the north and south.
“Everyone should build a sukkah near their home, as they do every year, despite the distress and pressure caused by the war,” he ruled. The rov explained that the fear of sirens does not qualify as mitzta’er (distress), which would exempt one from the sukkah, since the same fear exists even when leaving the sukkah.

During a visit by family members of hostages to Bnei Brak in advance of Sukkos, they went to the home of Rebbetzin Leah Kolodetsky, daughter of Rav Chaim and Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky and wife of Rav Yitzchok Kolodetsky.
During the visit, the Rebbetzin disclosed that her husband, Rav Yitzchok, has been sleeping on a wooden board placed on his bed. He has been doing so for a year, since the outbreak of the war.
The Rebbetzin showed the families the board and said, “You can enter the room and see. How can we sleep comfortably when we have no idea how or where the kidnapped are sleeping?”

Thousands of Chassidim came together at the main Vizhnitzer Beis Midrash in Bnei Brak to participate in Yom Kippur tefillos with by the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, Rav Yisroel Hager. The gathering drew particular attention this year due to recent news regarding the Rebbe’s health.
As Yom Kippur began, the Rebbe directly addressed the concerns about his well-being. “I don’t like it when people get into a panic and anxiety, on any issue – and not on this issue,” he told his Chassidim.
He reassured his Chassidim, saying, “If you have to undergo a medical procedure, be calm and trust Hashem.”
