Americans are about evenly split on whether former President Donald Trump should face prison time for his recent felony conviction on hush money charges, according to a new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Among U.S. adults, 48% say the former president and presumptive Republican nominee should serve time behind bars, and 50% say he should not. About 8 in 10 Democrats think Trump should face prison time, while independents are divided. About half, 49%, of independents say he should, and 46% say he should not. Most Republicans believe that Trump was mistreated by the legal system and say he should not face jail time. Democrats, conversely, are generally confident that the prosecutors, the judge and members of the jury treated Trump fairly as a defendant.

Though Hamas is no longer capable of executing an Oct. 7-style attack, the Israeli military will have to fight the terrorist group in the Gaza Strip for years to come, IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said on Monday.
“Hamas will remain with the ambition to be a terror organization,” Hagari told ABC’s Matt Gutman during a visit to Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city. “Will you and me be talking five years from now about Hamas as a terror organization in Gaza? The answer is yes.”
The Israeli government’s stated war goals include to destroy Hamas as a military and governing force in Gaza and to ensure that it can not threaten the Jewish state. Returning all hostages taken by Hamas during the massacre on Oct. 7 is another main objective.

The IDF says it has carried out a series of operations in the Gaza Strip over the past day, resulting in the deaths of over 30 gunmen and the destruction of terror infrastructure. In the southern Gaza city of Rafah, IDF troops killed more than 30 gunmen and located tunnel shafts and weapons. Meanwhile, in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, troops killed dozens of Hamas operatives involved in anti-tank attacks and rocket fire on Israel. The IDF also destroyed sites belonging to terror groups in Shejaiya. In addition, airstrikes were carried out against two primed rocket launchers in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Unbowed (La France Insoumise), a key member of the victorious left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) coalition in Sunday’s National Assembly elections, said his government would recognize the “State of Palestine” as soon as possible.
Mélenchon made his remarks to a large gathering of supporters following the win.
Recognizing a Palestinian state has been a key campaign promise of New Popular Front. At a rally in May, Mélenchon said, “France must recognize the Palestinian state now.”
Other France Unbowed members reiterated that promise. Mathilde Panot, a France Unbowed candidate re-elected in the Val-de-Marne, said, “Within the next two weeks, we will recognize the State of Palestine.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is releasing a new memoir at a particularly fraught moment, both for herself and for the Democratic Party. Set to release Tuesday amid the frenzy over President Joe Biden’s recent debate performance, “True Gretch” won’t do much to dispel questions about her national ambitions. But in a pre-launch interview with The Associated Press, Whitmer did what she could to shut down such speculation, saying bluntly that she would not step into the election if Biden were to step down. “It’s a distraction more than anything,” said Whitmer.

New Popular Front (NPF), a coalition of left-wing parties formed a month ago to block the rise of the French right, won the most seats in the French parliament in the second round of national elections on Sunday.
While the hastily cobbled-together coalition, with help from French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrists, succeeded in reversing last week’s first-round results, in which the right’s National Rally (NR) finished first, observers say it consigns France to political deadlock.
None of the three electoral groups emerged with anything approaching a clear majority in the National Assembly. NPF took 182 seats, Macron’s Ensemble coalition 163 seats and NR 143 seats.
To form a stable government, a party needs an absolute majority of 289 seats.

Two influential Democratic operatives, Rosa Brooks and Ted Dintersmith, are circulating a memo that outlines a plan for a “blitz primary” to replace President Biden if he can be convinced to withdraw from the race. The memo, distributed to party contributors, executive branch officials, and Biden’s campaign staff, proposes a rapid primary process before the Democratic National Convention in August.

A terrorist in Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit was killed in a drone strike in Southern Lebanon overnight Sunday, the IDF confirmed on Monday.
The death of Mustafa Hassan Salman in Qlaileh, in the Tyre District, was also confirmed by the Iranian-backed terror army, which said he was the 364th person killed since the start of the war.
According to the IDF, Hassan Salman took part in the planning and execution of various terrorist activities against Israel.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Sunday that any ceasefire deal reached with Hamas in Gaza will have no bearing on Israel’s actions with regard to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A group of Baltimore teachers is asking voters to approve a program that would give $1,000 to new parents in the hopes of reducing childhood poverty starting from birth. The “baby bonus” will appear on the ballot for city residents in November, after supporters secured the necessary 10,000 signatures to bring the question to voters. Their recent campaign relied on extensive canvassing efforts and a cute logo: a flying cartoon stork with a bag of money in its beak. The proposal is loosely modeled on a program implemented this year in Flint, Michigan, where women receive $1,500 during mid-pregnancy and $500 per month for the first year after giving birth. Officials said the Flint program was the first of its kind in the U.S.

Two Israeli citizens from the northern Arab town of Ar’ara were indicted on Monday on charges of attempting to join the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria, the State Attorney’s Office announced.
Abdel Mahdi Gabarin and Naim Gabarin were arrested last month at Ben-Gurion Airport as they tried to board a flight to Turkey, from where they had planned to cross into Syria, according to the charges.
Prosecutors said the suspects met following prayers at a mosque in the city of Umm al-Fahm, near Ar’ara, where Abdel Mahdi served as an imam.

The head of the UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, moaned and groaned that since the war began, half of the agency’s facilities in the territory have been destroyed. This destruction, he claims, has resulted in the deaths of over 500 people, including employees and displaced individuals seeking shelter. Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), made the remarks during a news conference alongside Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaty. The Egyptian official reaffirmed his country’s support for UNRWA, which has faced accusations from Israel – along with a mountain of evidence – of collaborating with Hamas and perpetuating the Palestinian refugee crisis. UNRWA denies these allegations.

Maj. Gen. Yehuda Fox, head of the IDF Central Command, which includes Yehuda and Shomron, concluded his 37-year military career on Monday, handing the reins to Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth.
Fox, 55, informed IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi in April that he planned to return to civilian life. He attributed the decision to fatigue and the sense that he had nothing more to contribute to Israel’s defense.
Fox was set to formally hand over control to Bluth during a ceremony on Monday evening at the Central Command headquarters in the northern Yerushalayim neighborhood of Neve Ya’akov. Right-wing coalition lawmakers, as well as representatives of Jewish communities in Yehuda and Shomron, were expected to boycott the event.

The future Republican vice presidential candidate’s plane is currently parked in an undisclosed hangar, an empty spot on its fuselage for where a decal featuring his or her name will soon be placed. Fundraisers have been planned. All that’s left: an announcement from former President Donald Trump on who’s his pick. Senior advisers and longtime allies insist they still don’t know who the presumptive GOP nominee will choose to join him on the ticket — with many believing the choice is still in flux. The decision will come at an unprecedented time of upheaval in the presidential race. President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party continue to grapple with his dismal debate performance and the intensifying calls for the 81-year-old president to step aside in favor of a younger candidate.
