A new chapter began this past Shabbos at Yeshivas Amalah Shel Torah of Beitar Illit, as the mantle of leadership was passed to the next generation. Rav Yisroel Feinstein, just 30 years old, was officially crowned as the successor to his father, the Rosh Yeshiva Rav Yosef Ze’ev Feinstein zt”l, who passed away suddenly on leil Purim at the age of 54.
Rav Ze’ev, a noted talmid chochom, founded Yeshivas Amalah Shel Torah at the age of 29 and dedicated his life to building it into one of the most esteemed chassidic yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel and beyond.
His passing left an enormous void, with countless talmidim mourning the loss of a father figure.
The yeshiva, known for producing many of the finest bnei Torah, carries a legacy of excellence in learning and middos. That legacy now rests on the shoulders of Rav Yisroel, who stood faithfully beside his father in recent years, helping guide the yeshiva day by day.
At the levayah, Rav Yisroel was named as the designated successor. And this past ShabbosParshas Hachodesh-Pekudei-Chazak— the final Shabbos of the winter zeman, the yeshiva gathered for a formal Shabbos Hachtarah. Posters with the image of the late Rosh Yeshiva zt”l adorned the walls, and the atmosphere was one of bittersweet yearning — grief intertwined with hope.
The entire yeshiva staff came to spend Shabbos in Beitar in apartments rented specially for the occasion. On Friday night, an emotional boteh lasted until three in the morning, as heartfelt divrei chizuk were shared by staff members, including the yeshiva’s mashgiach, Rav Shapiro.
Shabbos morning’s tefillas Shacharis stretched for hours, filled with song, tears, and the palpable presence of a legacy continuing.
Rav Yisroel, like his father before him, is a product of Yeshivas Ponovezh and is a chossid of Kretchnif. Despite his young age, he is widely respected and seen as a worthy heir to carry the yeshiva forward.
