Harvard University has announced that it will fully cover tuition costs for students whose families earn $200,000 or less per year.
With this change, approximately 86% of families across the United States will be eligible for a free education at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, according to ABC News.
Currently, the base tuition for a Harvard student stands at $56,550 per year. However, when factoring in expenses such as housing, meal plans, and medical services, the total annual cost rises to around $83,000.
The offer is even more generous for students coming from households earning $100,000 or less annually. In addition to having their tuition fully covered, they will also receive free lodging, meals, and healthcare services.
“Putting Harvard within financial reach for more individuals widens the array of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that all of our students encounter, fostering their intellectual and personal growth,” said Harvard president Alan M. Garber in a statement.
“By bringing people of outstanding promise together to learn with and from one another, we truly realize the tremendous potential of the University,” he added.
