A 65-year-old man from Netivot has been detained and is set to face charges for allegedly acting as a spy for Iran. The Shin Bet and Israeli police issued a joint statement, revealing that Eduard Yosepov was suspected of breaching national security laws by engaging with enemy agents and carrying out assignments under their orders in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars.
Yosepov is accused of photographing several strategic sites, such as military facilities, the Negev Nuclear Research Center, the Haifa port, and the oil refineries in Haifa. Under the direction of his handlers, he leased an apartment in Haifa with a view of the port, which was intended to serve as his operational base.
Despite his doubts about working for an adversarial state, Yosepov continued to fulfill the tasks assigned to him. To keep his activities under wraps, he was compensated through cryptocurrency and other discreet means. He is scheduled to face charges in court on Monday.
This case adds to a growing list of arrests and indictments involving Israelis who have allegedly cooperated with Iranian intelligence officers in performing espionage activities.
In a similar case earlier this month, 29-year-old Dorov Bokobza, a resident of Beer Sheva, was arrested after he initiated contact with Iranian agents, offering to sell them information. He claimed to have access to the Negev Nuclear Research Center. He was charged with contact with foreign agents and passing information to the enemy, according to his indictment.
Back in February, the state prosecution requested a sentence for Moti Maman of Ashkelon, after he confessed to working for an Iranian agent and traveling to Iran.
In January, the Shin Bet disclosed the arrest of two individuals from northern Israel, who are serving in the IDF.
