On Shabbos, Dr. Yitzhak Yifat, one of the three paratroopers featured in the iconic photo at the Kosel after Israel liberated the old city of Yerushalayim in the six day war, passed away. He was 81 years old.
Yifat was nicknamed “the crying paratrooper”, seen in the center of the iconic photo. He was one of the first soldiers to enter the old city, after it had been in Jordanian hands since 1948. He was 24 years old when the photograph was taken.
Photographer David Rubinger took the photo on June 7th, 1967. It has since become a world famous symbol of the miraculous victory of the six day war.
After the war, Yifat become a well-known obstetrician-gynecologist.
His Levaya is scheduled for Sunday at Moshav Ge’a, near Ashkelon in southern Israel.
