A resident of Bnei Brak was shocked to discover that three valuable rings had gone missing before Shabbos after she had left them on the table in a Yerushalayim restaurant.
On Friday morning, Mr. H, a resident of Bnei Brak, and his wife had planned a special trip to spend Shabbos in Yerushalayim. They had left early in the morning in order to enjoy a breakfast at one of the city’s restaurants. In the afternoon, as Shabbos was approaching, his wife discovered in shock that three expensive rings, which had been on her hand, were now missing.
Despite extensive searching throughout their home, there was no trace of the rings. Recalling the events of the morning, they realized that the rings had been mistakenly left on the restaurant table. Mr. H and his wife were beside themselves.
Mr. H immediately rushed back to the restaurant, only to find that the table had already been cleared. The rings, which had been left on the table, were disposed of by the waiters and thrown into a trash bin outside the restaurant. Feeling hopeless, Mr. H was now facing a major challenge: hours before Shabbos, the garbage trucks were parked in the lot, waiting until after Shabbos to begin their rounds. The nearest garbage truck was not scheduled to arrive until Sunday morning, and in the meantime, the rings were at risk of being lost forever in a mountain of trash bags.
Mr. H turned to Gedalya Silman, the deputy mayor of Bnei Brak, who empathized with the couple’s distress. Silman quickly contacted Aaron Rosenthal, the head of the office of Dovid Blumenstock, a member of the Yerushalayim city council. Blumenstock arrived at the scene in his Shabbos clothing to lead the Erev Shabbos ring recovery mission. The garbage truck arrived and began unloading the trash in a corner of the street, and volunteers meticulously searched until the three rings were finally found. Only after the successful recovery did Blumenstock head home to complete his Shabbos preparations.
