In a significant development today, Maran Hagaon Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, rosh yeshivas Slabodka in Bnei Brak, clarified that the United Torah Judaism party will not issue an ultimatum letter to Prime Minister Binyomin Netanyahu regarding the conscription law.
This decision comes after a conversation between Netanyahu and Rav Hirsch earlier today.
Last week, Matzav.com reported that agreements had been reached in talks with the gedolei Torah that would see UTJ vote in favor of the state budget this week. However, they had planned to issue a public ultimatum to Netanyahu, demanding that if the conscription law is not passed by Shavuos, the entire UTJ faction would withdraw from the coalition.
This proposal, known as the “Friedman Plan,” was first suggested several weeks ago by MK Yitzchok Pindrus. After it gained traction, it was approved by the rabbonim and became known as the “Pindrus Plan.”
Meanwhile, as previously reported, late last night, a messenger from the Belzer Rebbe, Reb Elyakim Shtark, the head of the political committee of the Belzer community, arrived at Rav Hirsch’s residence. During the meeting, Shtark relayed the Belzer Rebbe’s position regarding how to approach the conscription law issue. Rav Hirsch listened to the message and asked Shtark to deliver his own counterpoints concerning the conscription law. This morning, Shtark entered the Belzer Rebbe’s residence to pass along Rav Hirsch’s messages.
Afterward, a phone conversation took place between the Belzer Rebbe and Rav Hirsch.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Rav Hirsch held a phone conversation in English. Netanyahu also spoke with the Belzer Rebbe, and the two discussed the progress surrounding the conscription law and the upcoming votes on the state budget.
