Prior to his trip to the United Nations with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu this week, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen went on Erev Rosh Hashanah to receive the bracha of Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, Rosh Yeshivas Rashbi.
At around 10:00 AM, Minister Cohen arrived at the residence of the rosh yeshiva on Rechov Ha’admur MiGur in Bnei Brak.
At the outset of the meeting, the rosh yeshiva mentioned a passage from the Yomim Noraim tefillos, where we say, “אתה בחרתנו מכל העמים – You have chosen us from all the nations,” while requesting that the minister emphasize his Jewish identity during his travels around the world.
At this point in the visit, the Foreign Minister informed Rav Bergman that a historic and significant trip to the UN, alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu, is planned, and that he had just finished writing his speech. He asked the rosh yeshiva to share some words for his speech. The rosh yeshiva responded positively and bentched the minister for success in his visit, adding, “ה’ עוז לעמו ייתן, ה’ יברך את עמו בשלום – Hashem will give strength to His people; Hashem will bless His people with peace,” explaining that Chazal say that “strength” refers to the Torah.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the rosh yeshiva invited the minister to visit Yeshivas Rashbi in the future and be inspired by the hundreds of lomdei Torah there, emphasizing that this is what sustains the Jewish people at all times. “Only the Torah Hakedosha.”
