A sharp letter from prominent gedolim and rabbonim in Eretz Yisroel has been released against the establishment of a yeshiva that would combine limudei kodesh and limudei chol. In recent weeks, Rav Dovid Leibel (pictured above), nosi of Kehillos Achvas Torah, declared his aspiration and plans to establish a chinuch institution in Beit Shemesh that combines limudei kodesh and limudei chol, where students can earn a degree that will prepare them for the job market.
The statement from Rav Leibel stirred up a significant storm within the chareidi community. Tuesday morning, a letter was published, opposing the move to establish the mosad. The rabbonim cautioned not to send young men to study there or support it in any way.
The sharp letter, written by Slabodka Rosh Yeshiva Rav Dov Landau states that “Torah study has always been pure and free from any mixture of other matters.”
“They have dedicated their lives to the holy battle against all plans to blend other studies with the sacred study of Torah, even within the sacred halls of the yeshivos,” the letter emphasized.
“Now we hear that there are plans to establish an institution, a yeshiva gedolah that integrates secular studies within the holy realm, God forbid, in the city of Beit Shemesh.
“It is an obligation to raise a loud voice of protest against this and awaken the God-fearing people in every place, warning them not to send their sons and students there, and not to support them in any way, God forbid.
Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, Rosh Yeshivas Rashbi, added his signature and remarks to the letter, stating, “I join in the preservation of the tradition of pure chinuch in Beit Shemesh and in all cities of [Eretz] Yisroel.”
Also adding their signatures to the letter were Ponovezh Rosh Yeshiva Rav Berel Povarsky, Slabodka Rosh Yeshiva Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Ramat Elchonon mara d’asra Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein, and Grodno Rosh Yeshiva Rav Tzvi Drebkin.
