It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Hagaon Rav Asher Hakohein Deutsch zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh. He was 79 years old.
in recent months, the health of the Rosh Yeshiva zt”l had deteriorated, and he was hospitalized multiple times at the Ma’ayanei Hayeshua Hospital after contracting a devastating illness. Since then, his condition worsened, and heartfelt tefillos for his recovery were recited throughout the Torah world. However, on Friday evening, his condition worsened, and the doctors fought for his life. Today, his body’s systems collapsed and he was niftar.
The levayah will take place this evening at 8:00 PM from the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.
Rav Deutsch was born in Bnei Brak and began his journey in Torah learning at a young age. As a bochur, he learned in Yeshivas Ponevezh, where he formed close relationships with some of the greatest Torah leaders of his time, including Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach and HaGaon Rav Shmuel Rozovsky.
Throughout his life, Rav Deutsch’s shiurim were highly regarded. His talmidim took the initiative to publish his shiurim, which were later compiled into the sefer Shaarei Ribbis and the Kuntrus Shiurim, a collection that covers various masechtos in Shas.
In addition to his own seforim, Rav Deutsch played a significant role in preserving and disseminating the works of his great rabbeim. He was one of the editors of Shiurei Rebbi Shmuel, the collection of Rav Shmuel Rozovsky’s shiurim, and Shiurim Rabbeinu Avi Ezri from Rav Shach.
The Rosh Yeshiva led the Bnei Torah/Peleg Yerushalmi community following the petirah of the Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon Rav Shmuel Auerbach zt”l.
The Rosh Yeshiva elevated the standing of Bnei Torah everywhere and established and developed numerous mosdos haTorah.
He stood like a fortified wall against all attempts at compromise regarding the enlistment issue and produced thousands of talmidim over decades of Torah leadership and teaching at the Ponevezh Yeshiva, where, until his final illness, he continued to deliver his brilliant shiurim to the talmidim.
Yehi zichro boruch.
