Egg prices have been climbing sharply across the nation, with some stores asking for over $10 for a dozen. However, there’s one grocery chain where prices have remained more reasonable: Trader Joe’s.
According to The Krazy Coupon Lady, a blog tracking egg prices at major grocery chains, eggs at Trader Joe’s were priced at an average of $3.49 per dozen during the week of February 11.
This price is notably lower than the national average, which, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was $4.95 per dozen of Grade A large eggs as of January.
In December, the average price for a dozen of these eggs was $4.15, marking an increase from $2.51 in December 2023. Unfortunately, prices are expected to continue rising. It’s now common for a dozen eggs to be priced as high as $12 in some stores.
To manage their egg supply, Trader Joe’s has introduced a restriction, allowing customers to purchase only one dozen eggs per day.
However, as reported by CNBC Make It, Trader Joe’s is likely able to keep their egg prices lower because they buy directly from suppliers, limit their product selection, and use private-label brands to minimize price increases and control expenses.
“We only change our prices when our costs change,” said Trader Joe’s spokesperson Nakia Rohde, emphasizing their commitment to providing customers with quality products at affordable prices. “At Trader Joe’s we work hard every day to provide our customers outstanding value in the form of the best quality products at the best everyday prices.”
A nationwide bird flu outbreak has caused an egg shortage, which has contributed to the significant price hike for this everyday item.
The shortage is also affecting the restaurant industry. Waffle House has announced a 50-cent surcharge per egg due to the rising prices.
