Ariel Zohar, 13, is the sole survivor of his family after his parents and two sisters were murdered by the Hamas animals on Simchas Torah in Kibbutz Nachal Oz. Early that morning, Ariel had gone for an early-morning run, which saved his life. When the attack began, he hid in another home on the kibbutz and his life was spared. Ariel, whose bar-mitzvah is in a week, is now sitting shiva at the home of his grandfather, a Holocaust survivor. He asked ZAKA volunteers to return to his embattled home to retrieve his tefillin, which his father had received from his father, a Holocaust survivor whose parents were murdered in the concentration camps. In a special operation, ZAKA volunteers, together with a special IDF unit, entered Nir Oz. On the way, they came under anti-tank fire and IDF forces responded to the source of the fire. But they succeeded in their mission and retrieved Ariel’s tefillin. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)
