King Charles is reportedly set to present a “confidential proposal” to Donald Trump during his upcoming State visit.
This Royal initiative is believed to have the potential to ease tensions between the United States and Canada. Sources suggest that there are plans being considered to offer the US the status of “associate member” within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The Commonwealth, which currently consists of 56 countries, might soon include the United States as a new member.
Tensions between the two countries have been escalating since February, when a tariff dispute began after Trump signed orders to impose widespread tariffs on Canadian goods entering the US.
Trump had mentioned that Canada could avoid these elevated tariffs if it became the 51st state of the United States. As head of state of Canada, King Charles might play a role in easing this tension, especially given that Canada is already a member of the Commonwealth.
The idea of the US joining the Commonwealth was first suggested during Trump’s initial term by the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), with Queen Elizabeth’s approval.
Now that Trump is in his second term, the suggestion has resurfaced, with members of the RCS hoping that King Charles will extend the invitation to Trump during their upcoming encounter.
A source told the Daily Mail: “This is being discussed at the highest levels.”
“It would be a wonderful move that would symbolise Britain’s close relationship with the US.”
“Donald Trump loves Britain and has great respect for the Royal Family, so we believe he would see the benefits of this.”
When the RCS initially contacted Trump in 2017, the letter was delivered by current Reform leader Nigel Farage.
The most recent invitation was hand-delivered to President Trump last month by Sir Keir Starmer, inviting him for a second State visit.
President Trump enthusiastically accepted the invitation, praising both Starmer and the King, calling them “special and beautiful.”
He expressed that it would be an “honour” to visit the King’s “fantastic” country.
Trump also spoke warmly about Lady Victoria, Sir Keir’s wife, and reiterated his deep admiration for Britain and the Royal Family.
In addition, he promised to continue supporting British troops and showed apparent backing for Prime Minister’s controversial Chagos deal.
Should the US be invited to join the Commonwealth, it is hoped that this move will promote unity among nations based on shared values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The Commonwealth is focused on mutual support, cultural ties, and development, and the inclusion of the US as a member is hoped to help resolve the ongoing rift between the United States and its neighboring country.
