It is with great sadness that Matzav.comreports the petirah of Rav Nosson Nota Schiller zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Ohr Somayach in Yerushalayim, who passed away on Shabbos at the age of 88.
Many had davened for the recovery of Rav Nosson Nota ben Rochel, who had been hospitalized for a month at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital.
Rav Schiller was born in 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, to his father, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Schiller, and his mother, Mrs. Rachel Schiller. In his youth, he learned at Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin and Yeshivas Ner Yisrael in Baltimore.
Rav Schiller was one of the founders of the Teshuva Movement in our generation, having established Yeshiva Or Somayach for Baalei Teshuva in Yerushalayim following the Six-Day War together with Rav Noach Weinberg and Rav Mendel Weinbach.
Rav Schiller was closely associated with Torah leaders who guided him throughout his life, foremost among them Maran HaRav Shach zt”l, who had a special affection for him. Additionally, he was close with the Possek HaDor, HaRav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l.
Initially, the Yeshiva was named Shema Yisrael. Later, the name was changed to Ohr Somayach.
Over the years, Rav Schiller produced thousands upon thousands of talmidim from all corners of the world, and his Yeshiva expanded its branches across the globe.
Rav Schiller firmly believed in placing a strong emphasis on Gemara study in a Yeshiva for Baalei Teshuva, and he implemented this approach in his Yeshiva, teaching and inspiring thousands of students.
He was blessed with a choshuve family and leaved behind his sons: Rav Nachshon Schiller, Rosh Yeshiva of Or Shmuel in Yerushalayim; Rav Shlomo Schiller, Rosh Yeshiva of Or Somayach; and Rav Dovid Schiller of Beit Shemesh. Among his sons-in-law are Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook; Rav Yaakov Englander, Rosh Mesivta at Yeshiva Maor Yitzchak ; Rav Yechiel Bleidstein, Rosh Mesivta at Yeshivat Knesset Yaakov; Rav Moshe Shprung; and Rav Aharon Fein, Rosh Mesivta at Or Somayach.
The was held tonight at Or Somayach at 22 Rechov Shimon HaTzaddik in the Ma’alot Dafna neighborhood of Yerushalayim, proceeding to Har HaMenuchos for kevurah.
