Dear Editor@Matzav.com,
When, exactly, were WhatsApp groups appointed as the judge and jury for every single issue plaguing our frum communities?
When did the cacophony of uninformed opinions, half-baked arguments, and outright lashon hara become the voice of reason in matters that demand careful consideration and rabbinic guidance?
Let’s get something straight: Yeshiva tuition, the financial viability of camps, the logistics of helicopter landings in the Catskills, and the broader issues of indulgence and overspending—these are complex matters that require nuanced discussion. They are not the fodder for every self-appointed pundit with a smartphone to chew on and spit out with venom.
Yet, here we are, with every incident, big or small, being dissected on WhatsApp groups as if the collective wisdom of the community resides in those endless streams of messages.
People who have no understanding of the facts, no knowledge of the intricacies involved, and certainly no authority to speak on these matters are suddenly the loudest voices in the room.
What happened to seeking the counsel of our rabbonim and community leaders? What happened to speaking privately – that’s the optimal word, privately – and constructively with those involved instead of spreading rumors and stoking fear?
When did public shaming and baseless accusations become acceptable modes of communication?
This culture of instant judgment and public shaming must end. We need to return to a place where decisions are made with the proper respect for those who dedicate their lives to the klal, and where we rely on the wisdom of those who actually have the knowledge and the right to make these judgments.
Enough is enough.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Member of the Community
