At a meeting held today in Bnei Brak, the Gerrer Rebbe convened with the Slabodka roshei yeshiva, Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch and Rav Dov Landau, to discuss the ongoing crisis surrounding the draft law and the setting of a firm deadline for Prime Minister Netanyahu to pass the law.
The meeting, held in the shadow of the current crisis over the conscription law, focused on devising a joint strategy to pressure the Israeli government.
According to sources, the gedolim are pushing for a deadline to be set before Shavuos. The proposed deadline demands that Prime Minister Netanyahu pass the giyus law by then or else the United Torah Judaism party will withdraw from the coalition.
At the outset of the meeting, the Gerrer Rebbe and Rav Landau briefly discussed the yahrtzeit of the Chiddushei HaRim, which was today, with Rav Landau noting his family’s connection to Ger.
Following this, the gedolim agreed that a coordinated effort should be made to expedite the passing of the law ensuring the status of lomdei Torah.
When Rav Hirsch arrived and the crucial discussion began, the Gerrer Rebbe expressed the need for a firm deadline to be set for the Prime Minister.
Rav Hirsch responded, acknowledging the importance of setting a date but cautioning against making it public. He warned that an open deadline could backfire, sparking negative reactions against the chareidi community. “A written deadline could stir opposition and cause unnecessary backlash,” Rav Hirsch emphasized.
The Gerrer Rebbe agreed, recognizing that the key issue was finding a way to prompt action from the Prime Minister.
Rav Hirsch then proposed that the chareidi leadership send a clear message to Netanyahu, indicating the chareidi community’s demands, and setting Shavuos as a time to evaluate whether there is any possibility of passing the law. At that time, they could determine whether to leave the government or extend the timeline.
A discussion ensued among the gedolim, questioning whether an open-ended deadline, rather than a specific date, would be effective. Ultimately, Rav Hirsch concluded that a joint message should be sent to the Prime Minister from both Degel HaTorah and Agudas Yisroel indicating the chareidi community’s position on the matter.
In conclusion, the gedolim agreed that before Shavuos, they would reconvene to assess the feasibility of passing the giyus law. If it became clear that the law would not be passed, they would proceed with withdrawing from the coalition government.
