It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Aviezer Shimon Yosef Wolfson zt”l, former marbitz Torah at Yeshivas Toras Chaim in Moscow and father of Rav Daniel Wolfson, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Nesivos Chochmah. He was 87.
Rav Wolfson, who lived in Yerushalayim, was a man of great stature who left behind a noble mishpacha. He spent most of his years teaching Torah in Eretz Yisroel and abroad. He was known for his integrity and purity of heart.
Rav Wolfson gave tzedakah quietly and supported many Torah mosdos and talmidei chachomim. He raised an outstanding mishpacha of talmidei chachomim.
Rav Wolfson famously composed the renowned classic melody for “Mah Ashiv,” which was sung by Leibele Heshel and is now sung in shuls and botei medrash worldwide.
He had a close connection with Hagaon Rav Moshe Shapiro zt”l and was well-versed in the works of the Maharal.
A special chapter of his life was his time teaching Torah at Yeshivas Toras Chaim in Moscow.
Rav Wolfson was one of the distinguished mispallelim of the Gra Shul and was blessed to have a special closeness to Hagain Rav Shmuel Auerbach zt”l.
He would also often daven at the Minchas Chinuch Shul in the Shaarei Chessed neighborhood of Yerushalayim and learned afterward in the shul.
The levayah will take place tonight at 1:00 AM at Yeshivas Nesivos Chochmah in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of Yerushalayim.
Yehi zichro boruch.
