Upon the shloshim of Maran Rav Gershon Edelstein zt”l, Rav Eliezer Kahaneman, nosi of the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, has announced that Rav Edelstein’s son-in-law, Rav Dovid Levi, will continue the path of his esteemed father-in-law and serve as a rosh yeshiva at Ponovezh.
During the past week, Rav Kahaneman had prolonged discussions and consultations at the residence of the Ponovezh rosh yeshiva, Rav Berel Povarsky. They discussed matters concerning the yeshiva and its leadership following the passing of Rav Edelstein. With the blessings of Rav Povarsky, the announcement of Rav Levi as the new rosh yeshiva was made.
Rav Levi has served as a R”M at Yeshivas Ponovezh for many years. Now he will serve as rosh yeshiva and deliver a shiur klali once a week.
Rav Levi is a tamid muvhak of Ponovezh rosh yeshiva Rav Shmuel Rozovsky. In his youth, he would review Rav Rozovsky’s shiurim ten times or more and was known to have total grasp of Rav Rozovsky’s Torah. He also had a close kesher with Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach.
The new rosh yeshiva is known for his modest and unassuming style, reminiscent of his great father-in-law. He resides in the yeshiva neighborhood, where, throughout the day, talmidim make their way to his home to talk in learning.
Following the example of his father-in-law, Rav Levi also delivers his shiurim during bein hazemanim at his home, ensuring that there is a continuous flow of Torah for the talmidim.
Rav Levi’s first shiur klali will take place this week on Monday, at 6 p.m., in the cheder hashiurim klali of the yeshiva.
