As Purim approaches, amidst the shadow of war, many questions arise. Among them: How should one behave with joy that knows no bounds, and what should talmidei hayeshiva do and refrain from doing during these days?
In the video above, Rav Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky, mashgiach of Yeshiva Orchos Torah, seeks guidance from the Slabodka rosh yeshiva, Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, regarding the celebration of Purim in the midst of war.
Rosh Yeshiva: Concerning the mitzvos of the day, we should behave as usual, but concerning the “surroundings,” it’s different.
Rav Mishkovsky: What about the collections?
Rosh Yeshiva: Only in places like Bnei Brak and such.
Rav Mishkovsky: How about dancing in the streets?
Rosh Yeshiva: No! No! That’s not necessary.
One of those present to the Rosh Yeshiva: Recently, there’s a phenomenon where young men stand at intersections to collect money.
Rosh Yeshiva: I’ve heard about it already. It’s a disgrace like no other, disturbing in its concept! Disturbing in its concept!
