It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of the distinguished philanthropist Rav Shmuel Binyamin Eliezer Berger zt”l, a leader of the Satmar kehillah in London, who passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 70.
The niftar was known as an immense ish chesed, who generously contributed from his wealth to Torah and tzedakah institutions worldwide.
Rav Berger was born in England to his father, Rav Shalom Tzvi Berger, and his mother, Mrs. Fradel. He was a grandson of the famed Rav Getzel Berger, patron of Satmar.
Upon reaching adulthood, he married his wife, a daughter of Rav Shimon Breish, rov of the Agudats Achim kehillah in Zurich, Switzerland. Together, they built a home of Torah and chesed.
Rav Berger was a leading figure in the Satmar community in London and had a broad influence. He authored Torah works on topics such as mitzvos hatluyos baaretz, the borders of Eretz Yisroel, Kiddush Levanah, and the intercalation of years.
Throughout his life, he dedicated his mornings to Torah study, and in the afternoons, he received visitors at his home in the Stamford Hill neighborhood of London. Many knocked on his door, and everyone was warmly received. During his visits to Eretz Yisroel, he gave shiurim in kollelim and yeshivas, focusing primarily on topics he had studied deeply throughout his life.
Rav Berger was known for his generosity and support of Torah institutions from all segments and communities. Among the institutions he supported were Ponevezh Yeshiva, Satmar institutions, and other organizations.
He is survived by his wife and 14 children.
Among his brothers-in-law are Rav Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, Rosh Yeshiva of Brisk; Rav Chaim Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Ateret Shlomo; Rav Moshe Berezovsky, Rosh Yeshiva of Slonim; and Rav Shimshon Weiss of Lakewood.
Yehi zichro boruch.
