Matzav.com previously reported the petirah of Rav Zev Berlin zt”l, the Rosh Yeshiva of Gaon Yaakov in Bnei Brak, who passed away on Motzoei Shabbos.
After consulting with leading gedolim, Rav Naftali Zuchovsky, one of the heads of the yeshiva, announced that the late Rosh Yeshiva‘s wish was for his son, Rav Shraga Berlin, to succeed him as the new Rosh Yeshiva of Gaon Yaakov.
Rav Shraga, 53, is already a well-known figure among the talmidim of Gaon Yaakov, having stood alongside his father in the leadership of the yeshiva for the past six years.
Rav Shraga was born in Bnei Brak to his father, Rav Zev, and his mother, the late Rebbetzin Rachel Devora a”h, daughter of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman zt”l. From a young age, he was raised under the guidance of his grandfather, Rav Shteinman.
In his youth, he joined the Gaon Yaakov Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, where he studied under the tutelage of his father. Afterward, he continued the family tradition by learning at Yeshivas Brisk under the guidance of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik zt”l, who was his father’s rebbi, and there he acquired the Brisker method of learning.
After his marriage to his wife, a daughter of the Rosenbaum family of Yerushalayim, he joined Or Elchanan Yeshiva, where he continued his studies and became one of the yeshiva’s rabbeim, maintaining a close relationship with the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Moshe Mordechai Chodosh.
Over the years, Rav Shraga was invited to serve in Tiferes Yisrael Yeshiva, founded by Rav Yair Yisraeli in Rishon LeZion, alongside Rav Yisrael Meir Druck, where he became well-known for his shiurim and his special connection to his talmidim.
Six years ago, Rav Shraga was called to serve alongside his father at Gaon Yaakov in Bnei Brak, where he served as a Rosh Yeshiva despite living in Yerushalayim. He dedicated himself fully to the leadership of the yeshiva, working tirelessly for its hatzlacha.
Students of the yeshiva recall how Rav Shraga would remain in the yeshiva throughout the week, with his family often joining him on most Shabbasos to be among the talmidim.
Just last Shabbos, Parshas Zachor, hours before his passing, Rav Zev gave his son the honor of receiving Shlishi during laining for the first time, while Rav Zev received the aliyah for Parshas Zachor.
Rav Shraga is now set to lead Gaon Yaakov, following in his father’s footsteps, ensuring the continuity of the yeshiva’s legacy.
