It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Yitzchok Isaac Prag zt”l, who Rosh Yeshiva of Mercaz HaTorah in Yerushalayim for more than three decades and as the rov of the Izby Shul in the Mattersdorf neighborhood. He was 92 years old and had just returned from his granddaughter’s wedding in Yerushalayim when he was niftar.
A true Yerushalmi and a scion of a distinguished rabbinic dynasty, Rav Prag descended from generations of towering Torah personalities, including Rav Moshe Nachum Wallenstein, Av Beis Din of Yerushalayim, the Nesivos, Rav Yaakov M’Lisa Loberbaum, the Chacham Tzvi, and the Shaar Efraim.
His noble lineage was reflected in his dignified bearing, his humility, and his steadfast commitment to Torah and avodas Hashem.
From a young age, Rav Prag displayed remarkable depth and brilliance in learning. He was privileged to learn under Rav Chaim Shmulevitz and quickly earned a reputation as a gifted talmid chacham.
As Rosh Yeshiva of Mercaz HaTorah, he delivered shiurim to hundreds of American bochurim, who were deeply impacted by his clarity, warmth, and unwavering dedication to their growth in Torah and yiras Shamayim.
His influence extended far beyond the walls of the yeshiva, and his shiurim and writings left a lasting mark on bnei Torah.
Rav Prag authored many seforim, including Pri Hasadeh, Siach Hasadeh, and Tzitz Hasadeh. These works are widely learned and respected for their depth and originality.
He was the devoted husband of Rebbetzin Prag, tichyeh, née Rosental, the daughter of Rav Avraham Dovid Rosental zt”l, who served as Raavad of Yerushalayim and Rav of the Shaarei Chesed Gra Shul. Together, they built a home steeped in Torah and avodas hakodesh, raising a distinguished family of talmidei chachamim and marbitzei Torah.
He is survived by his children: his son, Rav Shlomo Prag, Rosh Kollel Siach Hasadeh, who is married to the daughter of Rav Tzvi Ordentlich, Raavad of Beitar; his son Rav Shimon Prag, R”M in Yeshivas Mir, who is the son-in-law of Rav Avraham Erlanger zt”l, author of Birchas Avraham; and his son Rav Aharon Prag, Rosh Kollel of Ponovezh, who is married to a daughter of Rav Eliezer Kahaneman, Nasi of Yeshivas Ponovezh. His daughters are all married to prominent talmidei chachamim and marbitzei Torah: Rav Yaakov Zinger, a Rav in Yeshivas Mir Brachfeld; Rav Yosef Binyamin Pinkus, a noted maggid meisharim; Rav Avraham Povarsky, Rosh Kollelim and R”M in Yeshivas Chevron Geulah; and Rav Shmuel Rotman, R”M in Yeshivas Ateres Yisrael.
Throughout his life, Rav Prag embodied the highest ideals of Torah, yiras Shamayim, and chesed. His entire being radiated humility, warmth, and sincerity. The generations of talmidim he taught, the seforim he authored, and the family he raised all serve as a lasting legacy to his life of avodas Hashem. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Yehi zichro baruch.
