It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rebbetzin Hendel Kaplan a”h. She was 68.
Rebbetzin Kaplan was the wife of Hagaon Rav Nechemia Kaplan, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Shaar Hatalmud in Yerushalayim and son of Rav Boruch and Rebbetzin Vichna Kaplan, renowned Torah pioneers of the last century in America.
She was a daughter of Hagaon Rav Meshulam Dovid Halevi Soloveitchik and Rebbetzin Yehudis Soloveitchik.
Rebbetzin Kaplan collapsed in her home on Rechov Yosef Ziv in Yerushalayim this past Tammuz and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Due to the severity of her condition, she was placed on a ventilator and the name Chava was added as a zechus for her recovery. She was later transferred to Herzog Medical Center, but in recent days her health deteriorated and she passed away today.
Rebebzin Kaplan was born in Yerushalayim on the 25th of Kislev to her illustrious parents. She was a granddaughter of the Brisker Rov, Rav Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, and a great-granddaughter of Rav Chaim Brisker. She was an eighth generation descendant of Rav Chaim of Volozhin.
Her mother, Rebbetzin Yehudis, is a daughter of Rav Asher Sternbuch of London, who was the son-in-law of Rav Shlomo Zalman Pines, author of Pnei Shlomo, and a descendant of the Vilna Gaon.
Raised in a home steeped in Torah, Rebbetzin Kaplan absorbed the values and mesorah of her exalted lineage.
She married Rav Nechemia Kaplan, an outstanding talmid chochom, and stood by his side for decades as he learned Torah continuously and was marbitz Torah to talmidim.
Out of concern for the highest standards of kashrus upheld in Brisk, and particularly the stringent practices observed by her father, Rav Dovid, she was entrusted with preparing the food for Rav Dovid’s yeshiva and her husband’s yeshiva. Her cooking ensured that the talmidim could partake in delicious meals without concern.
She was incredibly humble, a selfless baalas chesed who has a kind word for the yungeleit and bochurim always. She opened her home to the talmidim and gave herself over to others.
She is survived by her mother, her husband, Rav Nechemia, her children and grandchildren, and her brother, Rav Yitzchok Zev Halevi Soloveitchik, rosh yeshiva of Brisk. Last year, she suffered the loss of her brother, Rav Asher Shlomo Zalman Soloveitchik.
The levayah will take place at 11:00 p.m. tonight, beginning from her home on Rechov Yosef Ziv in Yerushalayim and proceeding to Har Hamenuchos for kevurah.
Yehi zichrah boruch.
