In a disturbing incident in Beit Shemesh, Mayor Shmuel Greenberg was attacked by extremists on his way out of a family simcha. The assailants shattered and vandalized his car, but Greenberg and his family were safely removed from the scene.
Mayor Greenberg’s son required medical treatment following the attack.
The Mayor’s office issued a statement, confirming that “Mayor Shmuel Greenberg was attacked by extremists as he was leaving a family simcha. His car was damaged and destroyed, but the mayor and his family were safely rescued from the location. The mayor’s son required medical care.”
In response to the violence, Greenberg stated that he trusted the Israeli Police to bring the lawbreakers to justice.
Deputy Mayor Yisroel Silverstein condemned the attack, expressing strong disapproval: “I completely denounce the severe event, in which extremists attacked the mayor’s car while he was attending a family celebration.”
Silverstein continued, emphasizing the city’s commitment to law and order, adding, “The entire city of Beit Shemesh, along with its municipal representatives, is committed to upholding the rule of law and human dignity. This is the moment to call on all residents of the city, from all sectors and communities, to unite in condemning and rejecting all forms of dangerous extremist violence.”
Yitzchok Elmaliach, the head of the local Shas faction and Deputy Mayor of Beit Shemesh, expressed his shock and revulsion at the violent attack, stating, “I was stunned and horrified by the serious incident in which Mayor Shmuel Greenberg was violently attacked as he was leaving a family simcha. This is a thuggish and dangerous act that has no place in any society.”
Elmaliach further remarked, “The very fact that a mayor in Israel had to be rescued under security and with a helmet on his head, fearing further harm, is inconceivable.”
He continued by stating that the violence directed at the mayor’s family crossed a red line that should never be tolerated. “What is even more severe is the harm to his family members, which is a line that must not be crossed. The fact that the mayor’s son was injured and required medical attention only illustrates how the extremism of these individuals knows no bounds. Beit Shemesh is a city for all its residents, and no fringe group has the right to harm us. I call on all municipal representatives to denounce and reject violence. I trust the Israeli Police to take the necessary steps to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such serious incidents do not occur again.”
Mayor Greenberg spoke with Ynet, providing additional details about the attack: “I am waiting for the rest of my family – my wife and children are still at the event, trying to get them out. The windows of our car were shattered, the tires were punctured, and the protesters overturned the vehicle. The police asked me to stay in the hall, which took some time because they were concerned about entering the area, as it was considered a point of conflict. Right now, the police are securing my home. The feeling is unpleasant, but one thing is clear: if these attacks against me are because I uphold the law, nothing will deter me. I am not going to give in to violence and thuggery.”
